DRUG COMPANIES vs STEM CELL RESEARCH

To All People Afflicted by Disease or Permanent Injuries: US drug companies are extremely profitable, but have no incentive at all to invest in private stem cell research. They are very good at maintaining a disease, but in our opinion have no desire to find cures. After all, if they found cures through stem cell research, they would lose money.

In our opinion, we believe that stem cell researchers have their hands tied by federally funded NIH grants and the drug companies know it. (As an example, we heard recently that insulin was developed 80 years ago over a weekend by a couple of researchers, but nothing has happened since, except more sales of gizmos and gadgets by the drug companies.) We believe people with all types of diseases and permanent injuries all would like to live a normal life. We all need to come together and raise funds for private stem cell research in the US. Funds to allow stem cell researchers to conduct research that they want to do without limitations except for cloning.

According to private stem cell researcher interviews conducted, grants issued by the NIH are limited in scope and restrictive. We need to give stem cell researchers the total autonomy they need to conduct their own research and therapy. Because of US laws, researchers are currently having to go outside the US to conduct private stem cell research and therapies. If our goal is to find real potential cures and not just maintain diseases, we need to form private stem cell research and therapy companies here in the US. If you are interested in becoming involved in this type of grass-roots pro-cure movement, please contact stemcell1111@yahoo.com.

Thank You

Poll: Americans Disapprove of Bush Stem-Cell Veto

Ever with his finger on the pulse of the American people, George W. Bush vetoed the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act last week, spouting a whole bunch of things about ethical and moral values, maintaining that stem cell research is tantamount to murder and that "…crossing this line would be a grave mistake."

But a <a href=" http://www.usatoday.com/news/polls/tables/live/2006-07-24-poll.htm " target="_blank">USA TODAY/Gallup Poll released earlier this week and taken over last weekend shows that Bush must believe the majority of Americans are unethical and immoral. A 58-percent majority of poll respondents say they disapprove of Bush vetoing the stem cell bill, while 36 percent -- probably the same crew that still approves of his overall job performance -- agreed with his decision. For the record, the poll showed that Bush's job approval rating remains at a dismal 37 percent.

"I had hoped that the president would have really tried to listen to our voices," said Dana Lewis, the American Diabetes Association National Youth Advocate, who suffers from type 1 diabetes. "I feel let down and I am very saddened that he shattered my sense of hope and the hopes of millions of other children and young adults."

Robin Anthony Elliott, executive director of the Parkinson's Disease Foundation agreed saying that "Congress, reflecting the views of three-fourths of Americans, was on the right side of history, the right side of science and the right side of popular opinion -- unfortunately, the Administration was not."

Other results of note from the USA TODAY/Gallup Poll:

Almost two thirds -- 65 percent -- of Americans say they are dissatisfied with "… the way things are going in the United States at this time."

Administration claims of economic happy days appear unrealized by most, with 59 percent disapproving of how Team Bush is handling the economy.

62 percent disapprove of Bush's handling of the situation in Iraq and 56 percent say flat-out that "the United States made a mistake in sending troops to Iraq."

The coming mid-term elections are clearly a referendum on a failed and unchecked White House and the Iraq war, but every Democratic Congressional campaign should view those stem-cell numbers as something to be hammered on over and over between now and November 7.

Right Wing Should Adopt 400,000 Frozen Embryos

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 0px 0pt; float: left;" src=" http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e164/bobgeiger/sammy_stem_cell.gif " alt="" border="0" />Now that George W. Bush, aided by Congressional Republicans and the Religious Right, has ruined immediate hope of meaningful progress on stem cell research, it's time for Democrats to tell them to put up or shut up on their strident claims that a child is born almost the minute two people even discuss conception.

One of the primary arguments against federal funding of stem cell research was the alleged viability of the 400,000 frozen embryos in storage at fertility clinics throughout the country.

Sam Brownback (R-KS), one of the Senate's major stem cell opponents, even went through the theater of holding a press conference showcasing children whose parents adopted them as frozen embryos from fertility clinics --the so-called "snowflake babies."

"What we're talking about in this debate is the use of embryos, young humans, as raw materials, raw material in research, raw material to exploit," said Brownback.

Bush himself made many similar statements and his spokesman, Tony Snow, even said that Bush considers it murder to conduct stem cell research.

"What the President has said is that he doesn't want human life destroyed. Now, you may consider that insignificant, but the President has said…. [he] believes strongly that for the purpose of research it's inappropriate for the federal government to finance something that many people consider murder; he's one of them," said Snow. "The simple answer is he thinks murder is wrong. The President is not going to get on the slippery slope of taking something that is living and making it dead for the purpose of research."

Senate and House Democratic leaders Harry Reid (D-NV) and Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) need to call these guys on their pious claims and immediately propose legislation that would fund an adoption program for all 400,000 of the frozen embryos stored throughout America. The first people who should step up to the plate and adopt one of these microscopic entities are the 37 Senators who voted against the stem cell research bill on Tuesday and the 193 members of the House who refused to override Bush's veto of the bill yesterday. Heck, the Bush family alone could probably adopt a couple hundred of them.

That leaves only about 399,500 of the little cells to find homes for, which is where Bush can start a faith-based, Christian program and enlist the help of James Dobson, at the ultraconservative Focus on the Family, who called the stem cell bill "barbarous legislation" and lauded the veto, calling Bush "a man of his word and a champion for the pre-born."

With the 1.5 million listeners they claim for their daily radio broadcast and the combined circulation of about 2.3 million subscribers for their magazines, Focus on the Family alone should be able to provide cozy little Petri dishes for the remaining cells by the end of July.

But if, by any chance, they turn out to be a bunch of hypocrites who don't really see these as living beings or who just don't give a damn enough to help them, Bush can always hit up those God-fearing -- and science-fearing -- people at the Family Research Council (FRC).

"Rather than defend human dignity, for the first time in U.S. history a majority of Senators approved legislation to use taxpayers' money for research requiring the destruction of human life," said FRC Chief Taliban, Tony Perkins. "The President is absolutely right to veto this legislation."

With that kind of endorsement, Perkins should have no trouble getting his large, compassionate flock to adopt a stem cell or 10.

And think of what a win-win this is for everyone involved: The 400,000 cells will get a home with the people who claim to care about them the most. And the proud, new, exclusively-heterosexual "parents" will get an unprecedented amount of time to get the embryo's room ready, prep the other children for a new brother or sister and, of course, adjust the family finances for a new mouth to feed and a new family member who will need health care once they're bigger than the head of a pin.

I think this will work out just fine. Unless Congressional Republicans vote against it -- or Bush uses his second veto.

You can reach Bob Geiger at geiger.bob@gmail.com

House Democrats Supporting Bush's Stem Cell Veto

There were only 14 of them, but they are names we should not forget -- the Democrats in the House of Representatives who voted yesterday to support George W. Bush's veto of H.R. 810, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. While their votes would have made no difference in the outcome -- there were nowhere near enough supporters to reach the two-thirds majority required to override Bush's foolish choice -- this is a stain these 14 should permanently carry on their Congressional resumes.

They are:

Jerry Costello (IL)

Lincoln Davis (TN)

Tim Holden (PA)

Marcy Kaptur (OH)

Dale Kildee (MI)

Daniel Lipinski (IL)

Jim Marshall (GA)

Mike McIntyre (NC)

Alan Mollohan (WV)

James Oberstar (MN)

Collin Peterson (MN)

Nick Rahall (WV)

Bart Stupak (MI)

Gene Taylor (MS)

And thus the need to win back a healthy majority in the House over the next four to six years is once again brought into specific relief. We need these 14 in our numbers now, but if we can go up 20 to 30 seats in the next few years, it will be a pleasure to kick their asses to the curb and be able to cite this vote when that happens.

Democratic Voices on Bush Stem Cell Veto

As everyone expected, George W. Bush yesterday took the path even more toward the Religious Right and away from science and enlightenment when he vetoed the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, which had just passed the Senate on Tuesday after passage in the House of Representatives in 2005.

The bill, H.R. 810, went immediately back to the House, where a vote of 235 to 193, fell 51 short of the two-thirds majority required to override Bush's rejection of the bill that would have expanded embryonic stem-cell research and given hope to millions of Americans suffering life-threatening and crippling illnesses.

"If this bill were to become law, American taxpayers for the first time in our history would be compelled to fund the deliberate destruction of human embryos," said Bush. "Crossing this line would be a grave mistake and would needlessly encourage a conflict between science and ethics that can only do damage to both and harm our nation as a whole."

I guess to this president, stem cell research is bad for our society, but it's just fine to have taxpayers fund the killing of tens of thousands of Iraqi citizens for no reason whatsoever.

Here's some reactions from Congressional Democrats:

Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA)

“I am extremely disappointed in the president’s veto and will do everything I can to make sure this groundbreaking research proposal still becomes law. Only one of the bills we passed Tuesday delivers real promise for a cure to millions of Americans. Yet this is the bill the president vetoed. The federal government should not stand in the way of a cure for some of the most debilitating diseases faced by Americans today.”

Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL)

“President Bush may have vetoed the stem cell bill today, but he has not vetoed the hopes of millions of Americans. Those families who wake up every morning to face another day with a deadly disease or a disability will not forget this decision by the President to stand in the way of sound science and medical research.

“President Bush’s first veto makes him the first president in the history of the United States to restrict medical research and the efforts of science to reduce suffering from disease and disability. Many of us in Congress, along with the vast majority of American families, will continue to fight until the promise of stem cell research is fully realized.”

Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA)

“I will mince no words about the President’s action. This veto is a shameful display of cruelty and hypocrisy. It is cruel, because it denies hope to millions of Americans who suffer from Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, ALS, juvenile diabetes, cancer, spinal-cord injuries, and many other diseases and debilitating conditions. Most of all, though, it is simply sad.

“HR 810 would have expanded federal funding to pursue this research. But with a stroke of his pen today, the President vetoed this bill and vetoed the hopes of millions of suffering Americans.

“There is an election in November, and we need to know where every candidate stands on embryonic stem cell research. Because we intend to reintroduce this bill in the next Congress. And we intend to prevail.”

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)

"Imagine: the first veto of this President is for a bill that has the miraculous power to cure. The Latin translation of veto means, 'I forbid.' President Bush has said today: 'I forbid allowing the best and brightest minds to pursue the science that they believe has the most promise and potential to cure. I forbid bringing embryonic stem cell research under NIH, ensuring the strict controls and stringent ethical guidelines that only NIH can impose. I forbid giving our scientists the opportunities they need to ensure our nation remains pre-eminent in science.'

Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA)

"Mr. President, we are here to say that as long as there is a need for the hope and help that stem cell research can bring, it will never be forgotten. As long as restrictions based on a narrow ideology block progress to new cures, this issue will never be closed.

"Mr. President, you can veto a bill, but you can't veto hope. We will be back again and again and again until we end the cruel restrictions on lifesaving research that are denying hope to millions of American patients and their families.”

Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ)

"With his veto, President Bush chose politics over people.

"The Scopes trial took place in 1925. Sadly, President Bush’s veto today shows that we haven’t progressed much since then. The United States cannot enter the 21st Century believing the Earth is flat. We need to celebrate science in this nation – not reject it.

"With a stroke of a pen today, President Bush undermined common sense. The President proved he is captive to ideologues and extremists in his political party. What the President did today was not compassionate, nor even conservative. It was an extreme action and history will hold him accountable.”

Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO)

“I am extremely disappointed that President Bush has issued his first veto on H.R. 810. With his veto, the President has destroyed the hope of millions of Americans who are suffering from diseases like Parkinson’s and diabetes that could be cured by stem cell research.

“H.R. 810 would have corrected the President’s short-sighted policy by allowing this important research to move forward under ethical constraints. This research holds so much promise to solving diseases that affect more than 110 million Americans. Vetoing this bill is one of the greatest mistakes of his Presidency.

“This research has the support of more than 70% of Americans and the President will suffer the political consequences for vetoing H.R. 810. I promise to keep fighting to expand stem cell research. This important legislation will become law; it’s only a matter of when.”

Disgustingly Hypocritical Bush on the Value of Life

Like Scott "The Lyin' King" McClellan before him, it's the job of White House Press Secretary Tony Snow to get out there and lie through his teeth for the team every day and to articulate the official views of George W. Bush to the media, who then relay it to the American people.

Here's what Snow relayed to us yesterday about his boss's view of stem cell research, the 70 percent of us in favor of it and the medical community that believes it will help people have better lives:

"What the President has said is that he doesn't want human life destroyed. Now, you may consider that insignificant, but the President has said…. [he] believes strongly that for the purpose of research it's inappropriate for the federal government to finance something that many people consider murder; he's one of them.

"The simple answer is he thinks murder is wrong. The President is not going to get on the slippery slope of taking something that is living and making it dead for the purpose of research.

And here's the life-affirming president himself in 2001:

"I believe human life is a sacred gift from our creator," Bush said in an August 2001 nationally televised address on the stem-cell issue. "I worry about a culture that devalues life, and I believe as your president I have an obligation to foster and encourage respect for life in America and throughout the world."

And, perhaps knowing the moment would come when he would nuke the hopes of people with diseases like diabetes, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's with a veto like the one he's about to deliver, Bush said this in his State of the Union address in January of 2006:

"Human life is a gift from our creator and that gift should never be discarded, devalued or put up for sale."

This from a guy who has the blood of over 2,500 of our troops and tens of thousands of Iraqis on his hands because of his discretionary war and who, as Governor of Texas, executed so many people they had to replace 'the chair' with electric bleachers.

Just lovely.

But at least Snow was honest in his final comment on the subject at yesterday's press briefing when he affirmed that Bush is only staying true to promises made to the Religious Right six years ago.

"He is fulfilling a promise that he has long made and he is keeping it."

List of Senators Against Stem Cell Research

Here's your list of Senate humanitarians who voted against H.R. 810, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, this afternoon…

The vote was 63-37 and only one Democrat joined in the GOP cruelty -- how hard was it to guess that it was Ben Nelson of Nebraska? He makes Joe Lieberman look like Ted Kennedy.

In addition, the roll call is good news for the campaign of Democrat Sherrod Brown in Ohio as Mike DeWine, in an act of election-year, political suicide, opted to stand next to the Opus Dei Boys, Brownback and Santorum.

Similarly, Jim Pederson should load up on this against John Kyl in Arizona and Claire McCaskill needs to have this vote ready to hang around Jim Talent's neck at every turn between now and November.

Here's the list:

Allard (R-CO)

Allen (R-VA)

Bond (R-MO)

Brownback (R-KS)

Bunning (R-KY)

Burns (R-MT)

Chambliss (R-GA)

Coburn (R-OK)

Coleman (R-MN)

Cornyn (R-TX)

Craig (R-ID)

Crapo (R-ID)

DeMint (R-SC)

DeWine (R-OH)

Dole (R-NC)

Domenici (R-NM)

Ensign (R-NV)

Enzi (R-WY)

Graham (R-SC)

Grassley (R-IA)

Hagel (R-NE)

Inhofe (R-OK)

Isakson (R-GA)

Kyl (R-AZ)

Martinez (R-FL)

McConnell (R-KY)

Nelson (D-NE)

Roberts (R-KS)

Santorum (R-PA)

Sessions (R-AL)

Shelby (R-AL)

Sununu (R-NH)

Talent (R-MO)

Thomas (R-WY)

Thune (R-SD)

Vitter (R-LA)

Voinovich (R-OH)

And tomorrow, Pope George W. Bush II whips out his veto pen and has someone witness his "X" on the bill.

Update: In my haste to get this list out, I neglected to mention that other Republicans vulnerable this year also screwed up with their votes today. <a href=" http://www.testerforsenate.com " target="_blank">Jon Tester in Montana should benefit from Conrad Burns voting against the wishes of most people in his state and Virginia Democrat <a href=" http://www.webbforsenate.com " target="_blank">Jim Webb should say "stem cell" and "George Felix Allen" together in almost every sentence from now until November 7.

And Rick Santorum? He's already gone, baby.

Senate Passes Stem Cell Bill -- Goes to Bush for Veto

By Bob Geiger

In a bipartisan display that should send a clear message to a White House bent on exercising the first presidential veto of George W. Bush's tenure, the U.S. Senate this afternoon approved H.R. 810, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, which will expand federal funding for embryonic stem cell research and give hope to millions suffering from life-threatening or crippling diseases.

The vote was 63-37, meaning that it is extremely unlikely that Senate Democrats could rally the 67 votes necessary to override a certain Bush veto.

"There has been an upsurge of demand," said Hillary Clinton (D-NY). "Support for this legislation has crossed every line we could imagine, certainly partisan lines, ethnic, racial, geographic lines."

Republican supporters agreed, with Orrin Hatch (R-UT) saying that "this is the bill that will help provide the long overdue expansion of the number of stem cell lines eligible for federally funded biomedical research. This is what our leading scientists have told us they want and need to move the field of stem cell research forward."

But any hope that Bush would change his mind about vetoing the bill -- perhaps as early as tomorrow -- was shattered today by White House Press Secretary Tony Snow.

"The simple answer is he thinks murder's wrong," said Snow at the daily press briefing. "The president is not going to get on the slippery slope of taking something living and making it dead for the purposes of scientific research."

Also passed today -- both by 100-0 votes -- were S. 3505, Rick Santorum's (R-PA) Fetus Farming Prohibition Act and S. 2754, the Alternative Pluripotent Stem Cell Therapies Enhancement Act.

But H.R. 810 was the one everyone was watching as it was the legislation that would open the door to a new era of medical research in America -- and one supported by two out of three Americans and overwhelmingly sought by the scientific community and medical organizations.

Look for George W. Bush to slam that door tomorrow.

Odds and Ends From Senate Stem Cell Debate

Here's some sound bites from yesterday's Senate debate on the three stem cell bills that will receive a vote this afternoon.

Carl Levin (D-MI) speaks on using embryos that would otherwise be destroyed and America's leadership in research:

"The logic of some embryonic stem cell research opponents is totally befuddling. They are apparently willing to ignore the discarding of the embryos by fertility clinics, but they label as morally objectionable the life-giving use of embryos which would otherwise be discarded. I believe that embryonic stem cell research is truly a life-giving, not a life-destroying, process because of the extraordinary potential for healing living, breathing human beings who have names and faces and loved ones.

"While the President is fighting against research in America, other countries are pressing ahead. America has always been at the forefront of scientific innovation, and we could do this research faster, more efficiently, and more ethically than most other countries. We also have an obligation to speed its potential benefits to the American people and to people around the world."

Tim Johnson (D-SD) on choosing "life-giving" research:

"Stem cell research is conducted with egg cells fertilized in a laboratory for the sole purpose of assisting childless couples who wish to have a baby. After choosing embryos for implantation in the mother, the remainder are routinely destroyed as medical waste. I believe these cells, of which hundreds of thousands are now stored at fertility clinics, would be better used to advance medical research that holds great promise for curing or preventing some of the world's worst diseases, as well as for repairing spinal cord and other injuries. I believe choosing research over incineration is a moral choice.

"My South Dakota values, my religious faith, and my commitment to South Dakota families tell me we must choose life-giving research over incineration of these cells."

Olympia Snowe (R-ME) talks about how America can lead or follow on medical research:

"There can be no doubt that stem cell research will move forward. The real question is whether our Nation will be engaged ..... whether our scientists will realize the breakthroughs ..... whether we will produce the treatments. Or whether those developments will draw our best minds and new medical investment abroad, where American vision and oversight will not influence the future of medicine.

"I believe in stem cell research. More than 70 percent of the American people believe in stem cell research. I believe in it because I cannot look at a person suffering from a debilitating, and even fatal disease and support prohibitions which impede ethical research aimed at alleviating of that suffering."

Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) cites the sheer silliness of the Santorum bill:

"The Fetus Farming Prohibition Act bans activities that occur in horror movies, not in our research labs. We should not allow these farfetched and frightening techniques, which no respected scientist anywhere endorses, to distract from the plight of millions of Americans seeking cures from devastating diseases."

Barack Obama (D-IL) on consensus and the one big roadblock:

"Democrats want this bill passed. Conservative pro-life Republicans want this bill passed. By large margins, the American people want this bill passed. It is only the White House right now that is standing in the way of progress, standing in the way of so many potential cures."

Jim Bunning (R-KY) says why embryos should be destroyed, versus using them to save lives:

"As an opponent of the destruction of human embryos, I believed the Bush administration's decision to allow the embryonic stem cell research was misguided. H.R. 810 goes even further than the current policy. It cancels the protections of the 2001 cutoff for research by allowing research of all embryonic stem cells created from in vitro fertilization treatments. This legislation would move us in the wrong direction on this issue.

"Some have said that these excess embryos which would be used for research would be destroyed anyway. However, I do not think this makes ethical sense. Just because these budding lives will not survive does not mean that we should ghoulishly conduct experiments on them."

Dick Durbin (D-IL) calls Bush on compassionate conservatism:

"I have met the victims of ALS and diabetes and Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. I know they are praying we do the right thing tomorrow. I hope we pass this bill. I am not certain it will pass, but I am hopeful it will. It will have strong support on this side of the aisle, and I hope there will be enough votes on both sides of the aisle to enact it. Then the bill will go to President Bush, and he will have a moment in the history of this country to make a momentous decision. If he decides to go forward and veto the stem cell research bill, it will be the first veto of the Bush Presidency.

"President Bush described himself politically when he ran for office as a compassionate conservative. His decision on the future of this bill will be the test of his compassion. If he has compassion for those who are suffering across America, who are praying for the hope this research can bring, I hope he will pray over his decision long and hard. And if we pass this bill, I hope he will sign it and give these Americans a chance for a better tomorrow."

Tom Harkin (D-IA) slaps one of H.R. 810's primary opponents, Tom Coburn (R-OK), when he continues to say that stem cells cause tumors:

Coburn: Here is the key point that needs to be made in this debate: If you use your own cells, you will not have tumors, you will not have teratomas, and you will not have rejection. If you use embryonic stem cells, you will have tumors, you will have teratomas, and you will have rejection.

That is what we know. That is why I, as a scientist, have not raised the life issue here once, but I am adamantly pro-life. I believe the science is so far ahead of this debate. When everyone knows what is really going on in terms of research, they are going to want the dollars put into the stem cells, both in terms of dedifferentiation--we know we can differentiate cells backward to make them pluripotent--and also to isolate cells from our own human body to use back on us. That is an important part of the debate.

Harkin: I again say that all the Nobel scientists, all of the leading scientists in America simply do not agree with the Senator from Oklahoma. These are the people involved in cell biology and that kind of research.

The Senator says embryonic stem cells will produce tumors. We do not know that is true. We do not have any real long-term data to know anything about how embryonic stem cells will work later on.

More Harkin:

"I get back to the point that when you have almost every disease group in this country supporting the bill that is before us, H.R. 810, you have Nobel laureates, scientists, doctors, and you have 19 Directors of NIH saying that this has great potential, then I say, again, to my friends that you have to make either one of two assumptions. Either all of these people have been hoodwinked and they do not know what they are talking about or they have no care or concern about ethics or morals or anything else.

"I think both assumptions are wrong. I think these people know. They are informed. They may not know every little thing medical doctors might know, but they know the potential. Second, I think they are vastly ethical and moral people."

The vote is scheduled for late this afternoon.

You can reach Bob Geiger at geiger.bob@gmail.com
