Tom Tancredo, FOX, Lou Dobbs, and Pat Buchanan: These Nazis Are Saluting YOU

For the past two years, cable TV watchers have been force-fed endless anti-immigration propaganda by most of FOX News (led by Hannity, O'Reilly, and John Gibson), CNN's Lou Dobbs, and MSNBC's Pat Buchanan. Their go-to guy on immigrant-bashing is Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO), who is threatening to run for President.

This right-wing immigrant-bashing led to Jim Sensenbrenner's (R-WI) bill to make 12 million illegal immigrants into felons, which in turn produced massive immigrant rallies and caused large numbers of legal immigrants to vote for Democrats. But it also led to the revivial of violent hate groups, as AP reports:

Report: Supremacist activity flourishes

Factions fueled by anti-immigrant passions grow by 33 percent, study says

NEW YORK - Huge street protests made millions of immigrants more visible and powerful last year, but they also seem to have revived a hateful counter force: white supremacists.

Groups linked to the Ku Klux Klan, skinheads and neo-Nazis grew significantly more active, holding more rallies, distributing leaflets and increasing their presence on the Internet — much of it focused on stirring anti-immigrant sentiment, a new report released by the Anti-Defamation League says.

Extremist groups are good at seizing on whatever the hot button is of the day and twisting the message to get new members,” Deborah M. Lauter, ADL civil rights director, said Monday. “This one seems to be taking hold with more of mainstream America than we’d like to see.”

That's because they're seeing this extremist hatred on TV dressed in respectable suits, thanks to FOX, MSNBC, and CNN - and Tom Tancredo.

Old Klan chapters have been revived and new ones started throughout the South, historically the heart of the group, and in other places such as Michigan, Iowa and New Jersey, says the report, which was scheduled for official release Tuesday.

Last May in Alabama, an anti-immigration rally included slogans such as, “Let’s get rid of the Mexicans!” according to the document, titled “Ku Klux Klan Rebounds.”

“The Klan is increasingly cooperating with other extremist groups and Neo-Nazi groups,” Lauter said. “That’s a new phenomenon.”

Klan resurgent

Between 2000 and 2005, hate groups mushroomed 33 percent and Klan chapters by 63 percent, according to Mark Potok, director of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate crimes.

Precise data are difficult to pin down, but Potok’s group counts as many as 150 Klan chapters with up to 8,000 members nationwide. More than 800 hate groups exist around the country, Southern Poverty research shows.

In the late 1990s, memberships in such groups was crumbling as they lost leaders and struggled to organize, said Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino. Many hit bottom around 2000.

“Whenever you think the Klan is down and out, they find another way to reinvent themselves,” he said of the recent resurgence.

Historically, the Klan’s focus had been to terrorize African-Americans — through race riots, lynchings and other killings — but it reached peak membership at more than 4 million in the 1920s by focusing on immigration.

Irish then, Mexicans now

Newcomers from Ireland and Germany were portrayed as Catholic usurpers invading the United States, taking jobs from native-born Americans and undermining national fabric, Levin said.

Said Potok: “It’s remarkable to look back at the nativist sentiments toward Catholics — it’s very similar to what we’re seeing with Mexicans now.”

In an earlier era, Irish Catholics like Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, John Gibson, and Pat Buchanan would be the victims of this rightwing extremism. Now these Irish Catholics are fueling it.

Today, many white supremacists blame immigrants, particularly Hispanics, for crime, struggling schools or unemployment, for instance. With many Americans already divided on how to revamp laws and practices to address the nation’s swelling immigrant communities, immigration “is an issue that works for hate groups,” Potok said.

Many Latinos are feeling the effects firsthand. Last September, a Kentucky family originally from El Salvador found a wooden cross burning on their front lawn just weeks after they moved in. Earlier last year, a Latino teenager in Houston was brutally beaten and sodomized while one attacker screamed “White Power!” The victim barely survived, and one attacker was sentenced to life in prison.

‘The level of vitriol is new’

“I’ve been doing (Hispanic advocacy work) for a long, long time and the atmosphere has never been as poisonous as it has been in the last few years,” said Lisa Navarrete, a vice president at the National Council of La Raza. “The level of vitriol is new.”

Increasingly, fear permeates many Hispanic communities as individuals and businesses are targeted. Last year, La Raza held a workshop at its annual convention titled “Keeping Our Institutions Safe.”

“It was very well attended,” Navarrete said. “Unfortunately.”

As long as the Corporate Media and the Republican Party promote rightwing extremism, legal immigrants will vote for Democrats. That means the immigrant-heavy West will join the Northeast and the Midwest in becoming solidly Democratic, leaving the GOP as a southeast regional party led by white supremacists in suits.

If only they read the Bible: As ye reap, so shall ye sow.

Illegal Imigration

Federal must be upheld. What part of ILLEGAL is not understood.

Where is the logic?

I agree with danielb. There IS a big difference between legal and ILLEGAL immigration. Why is this always glossed over by the left? So if you believe in the rule of law, does that make you neo-nazi? I just don't get it.

The American "rule of law"

has never treated illegal immigrants as felons.

That's what Tancredo et al are trying to do. Today's immigrant-haters want to turn 12 million hard-people into felons - and deny citizenship to their children.

Several of Alberto Gonzales' grandparents were illegal immigrants - indeed many American citizens are the descendants of illegal or undocumented immigrants. The early 20th century slang for Italians was "WOP" - "without papers".

Should they all be treated as felons?

There are rational ways to solve the problem of 12 million illegal immigrants - it's called "comprehensive immigration reform."

There are also hate-driven ways to solve the problem - like demonizing job-seeking immigrants and militarizing our borders so we end up shooting those who cross in search of a job.

That kind of hate-mongering is feeding the extremist groups as described in the article.

Is that what you want?

And we all love Alberto Gonzalez...

Maybe he wasn't the best example :)
I'm just saying that it is okay to recognize that 12 million illegal immigrants is a big problem for our country. I tend to think that comprehensive immigration reform may be the only reasonable solution.
People who enter the country illegally are unfairly bypassing the LEGAL system of immigrating. As someone with a friend who was forced to return to her native country after years of trying to get a Green card (she stayed here on various visas)
it annoys me that so many people "jump the line".
So I am against illegal immigration, and I am not a hate-mongering extremist.

Felons?

As I remember in the past illegals (from all over the world) were jailed and sent back. They didn't have a trial to be declared felons.

[Note: Why declare them felons? It just occurred to me that many illegals declared felons could end up in the "privitized prisons" as free labor. You do know our prison system has more people behind bars than anywhere in the world? Even more than the labor prisons of China.

A friend of mine in Florida said, many of the retired are being conned into investing in new privitized prisons. It's big money by Wall Street for profits. Is this what Capitalism should be in a democracy?]

Ellis Island rejected immigrants who came here on boats so we did send them back when they were criminals, diseased, no sponsor, etc. Many never obtained passage on the other end to enter our country. There were quotas when the flow got too great.

I agree, they should be treated with respect as human beings and have rights to be treated as such while on our soil.

The Mexican government is responsible for the increased poverty of their citizens who have no choice but to flee if they are to survive. The division of rich and poor in Mexico is what Bush wants for us.

Corporations and NAFTA forced the S. American farmers off their land. Their wages and benefits better for some but still slave labor compared to ours.

Mexico City residents are protesting over the increased cost of tacos. American corn imports are too expensive for them. They can't raise their own corn under NAFTA, etc.

NAFTA has been a failure for us (loss of jobs) and Mexico (whose citizens don't/can't stay in their country and are even worse off then prior to these trade agreements).

I know they are dirt poor because a great nephew of mine is near Mexico City doing missionary work.

It is obivious that a good standard of life can not be had by all unless there is a middle class. Cheap labor (by illegal immigrants) drive down that American dream for us and them. It is happening in Europe too.

If Bush and the Neo Cons want the Americas Union, they are going to have to bring jobs and stability to both our countries. So far they mismanaged it for the profit of the few.

I know one thing...we can not take in the poverty striken world caused by the Empire Builders. Most people would prefer to stay with their families and in their own country.

We all go down together in a plantation society.

Dove, I'm glad to see you join me in

placing responsibility with the Mexican government
for the unemployment in their country.

Seeking employment is the reason most cross the bounder
into the United States. Many stay here, but a number of immigrants
work, send money home, and eventually return to their homeland.
Faced with starvation and ruin, they have few choices.

The globalists

kwahlf-

What is this support for "free trade" when it is a failure here and in Mexico (most the world from what I can tell)?

The President, candidates, and members of Congress (of both parties) act like it is making "us" prosperous. Our economy has never been better? The "US" being only the few self interested elite who prosper. The American worker has not.

I feel the labor leaders like many in Congress have betrayed the workers in this country. Why weren't they on strike (like in France) against the WTO taking their jobs and livelihood? There was hardly a whimp except for Seattle.

Dean got up before the workers in Iowa and said, he supported the WTO even if they didn't approve. He wonders why he lost the primary? It wasn't his yell but his politics.

Many Democrats such as the DLC support the WTO/NAFTA. Dean approved of the Iraq war he just didn't approve of the way it was done by the President.

Who are they? I call them "globalists" and they are from both parties. They don't care about workers, our borders, or our future...only their own self interest. They don't show up at protests by American citizens and workers. The globalists do support/go to illegal immigrants protests for the right to stay here, get citienship, etc. Why is that?

Why don't illegal immigrants show up in such numbers to protect their jobs, rights, against the war, etc. with other citizens? Do they mostly not care unless it is a protest just for them?

That's what most of these hatemongers say

that they are against illegal immigration. If that's the case, why don't they stop it where it starts? That is, stop the big corporations that are fueling it along with the racism? South and Central Americans wouldn't be coming over here if there were fair trade practices instead of free trade practices. They can't even exist where they are because of "free" trade, so they come here, where they can get at least a few cents per hour and a chance to exist. It's virtually a crime to exist where they exist, so why wouldn't they come here, where it's not yet a crime to exist? Be careful what you support, because before long you (anti-government hate mongers) could easily be in the position these destitute immigrants are in now.

Jerry Brown Has Criticized Mexican and Chineese Slave Labor

I heard Mike Wallace talking about the issue of
sovereignty is mainly advocated by the Klu KLux Klan.
This is similar to Right Wing Propaganda, this is Left
Wing Propaganda. Ralph Nader and Jerry Brown prominent
Liberals have railed hard against Trade Deals that send
American jobs to China and support the trafficking of
humans from Mexico for the purposes of cheap labor and
criticize Walmart as being a front organization for
Chineese Slave Labor and cheap imports. Lou Dobbs,
and Pat Buchanan are not Nazi sympathizers.

You call them Nazis...

because they don't agree with you on everything?

I feel, Lou Dobbs and Pat Buchannan are right about immigration ruining our soverignty. We can't just land in any country in the world claiming the right to citizenship, benefits, jobs, education, etc.

Lou Dobbs is right about the destruction of the middle class. If you get rid of the middle class you ruin democracy and our lifestyle.

So what if the Klu Klux Klan or Pat agree with me about it. All of what you say about China, Trade Deals, and slave labor is opposed by 80% of Americans...so they would be part of that 80%. They can't be wrong about everything.

As a Progressive I side with Republicans on some issues. What I disagree with is how they use it to profit off it for themselves and not caring about the whole. They should pay back since they live in a free country which educated, protected, and allowed them to prosper.

Yep.  Just because a lot

Yep.  Just because a lot of right wing flag wavers want the immigration laws enforced doesn't mean they shouldn't be enforced.  We need a firm crackdown on illegals & those who hire and rent to them.

The illegal alian flood is keeping wages low for low income citizens & crushing our education & social services.  The Dems want the illegal's votes & the Rebubs want the cheap labor.

It's time to stand up & say enough!

Rise of wing-nut extremists the worst part

of Smirk's illegal reign. The corporatist media is as complicit in fostering them as the Neo-Cons Neo-Confederates...
