This appears to be purely a state issue
Maybe I'm just dense, but I don't see what difference it would make to Bush or Rove. Neither was mentioned in the article.
As far as the activist judges are concerned, I think the problem would exist in the state courts, if it existed at all. I believe there is already sufficient case law for a federal judge to deal with disparate school funding if that was an issue.
The tax thing seemed like a straw man.

Bigsmirk,
My reference to Rove/Dubya is my perception of them as one entity, with Rove being the brain, and Dubya being the mouthpiece. The reference in the article to "activist" judges is one of Rove/Dubya's favorite talking points.
The "issue" is that the Alabama state constitution includes racist language, and the vote indicates that the majority of Alabama voters are racist and bigoted. It's more symbolic than it is an issue of funding, just like the movement to honor the Confederate flag and all that it stands for. For many in the deep South, their defeat in the Civil War is still a bitter pill to swallow.
I doubt that many Republicans...
... would defend the vote in Alabama. I certainly can't.

I agree, and neither would most true Democrats. However, the results speak for themselves, so deeply-rooted racism apparently transcends political beliefs.
Rove's Abortion Angle & "Activist Judges"
Thank you Bill. This is a great example of what I have been saying all along.
Karl Rove, by using the abortion issue was able to nationally broadcast the phrase "activist judges" a million times. "Activist Judge" is the rallying cry of the Confederate Nation. "Activist Judges" de-segregated the south and closed some of the gaps on what Lincoln had started.
By using the abortion issue, Karl Rove was able to camouflage his overture to racist mentalities while hiding behind the veil of "values" such as the abortion issue. (Meanwhile, the abortion issue is actually a government limitation/intrusion issue, not a values issue, you can be moraly pro-life and politically pro-choice).
The Article on Alabama (nice red state "values" by the way)confirms my conviction that Karl Rove actually targeted racist bigoted people and counted on them to be the difference makers of this election.
Blue planet, I totally agr
Blue planet,
I totally agree. According to Rove it is perfectly acceptable for an "activist judge" to stop a legitimate vote count in Florida, or to send a news reporter to jail for refusing to identify his or her sources. It is not okay however, when a judge interprets the Constitution as really meaning what it says: freedom and civil rights for ALL Americans.
It's enough to make you want to slap somebody.
AP article
I read the AP article on this in my local paper. The federal laws already over ride the state laws on segregation. I think the sad thing about this amendment not passing is it's representation of the mindset in Alabama. Our paper quoted the Christian Coalition leader in Alabama saying they didn't want the second part of the amendment which strikes out the Alabama constitution's wording that states Alabama isn't responsible for providing an education to all children. The Christian Coalition leader said the state might start taxing more to provide a better education for the children of that state. I'm thinking, "Oh, yah, God forbid we make sure the children are educated!" (Rolling my eyes in disgust)
The reasons I might tie this into Bush/Rove is 1) God forbid we tax even when it is warranted and needed and do-able in every respect. And 2) Bush is the Christian Coalition's choice for president. He represents the Christian Coalition goals much more than the Republican goals.
Racism
I also believe this is a much bigger issue in regards to the so called Republican movement tied to the Chritian Coalition backing. What we are seeing here is a very smart and calculated attack plan by a prejudice part of society. I would ask everyone reading these comments to do some research in the white supremacy department. Research interviews and documentaries done in the last few years. I recall One of the leaders stating they were evolving into a more professional and organized institution. Mentioning religious groups, business groups ,etc. I believe the adminstration is one entity (greed and money) and (congress preserving race) is another. The right hand (administration) does not knoweth what the left hand(majority in congress)does. Public education is being abliterated, grants are being cut for college education, public programs for the poor & low income families are being cut, so on and so on. I think this is an attack on the American people in need and the majority are not WHITE. We have to think really hard and read between every action taken by the administration and by congress. Look into even your local state actions on legislature and find the truth among all the lies and misleading statements made to cloud your thought. This is about money, power and race. Religious beliefs tie into Race, Christian, Catholic, Muslim and Jewish. Plus other religions out there that also all tie into race. We have to look into the truth that we are either to naive to see or a truth too uncomfortable to acknowlege. Prejudice lives in all of us, you can lie to people and yourself all you want, but you know the truth of your thoughts.
If we are honest then we will be free'd.
Very Perceptive
There is much truth in what you write. Sometimes we view the white supremacist as being not very bright. But Hitler was not just crazy. He was very intelligent on how to play on German emotion, especially after World War I loss. Limbaugh showed his true colors to the whole country on Monday Night Football. Delay's redistricting was largely along race lines.
Such hatred has always extended from and has taken advantage of fear. White southern males fear blacks getting ahead at their expense. White southern preachers still preach against the "black devil"
I find it disgusting
The bottom line is Power
At the risk of sounding naive -- let me throw something else into the pot. One reason this divide is racial is because the black individual tends to vote Democrat thus becoming the enemy to Republicans and Rove and the "Christian" Coalition. It's bigger than a race issue -- it is a total power issue.
So is race the cause of the divide, or is the power play the cause of the divide?
