Kentucky's Fourth District
Greetings fellow Democrats committed to taking back OUR Congress this year. As many know I have been watching the Congressional elections pretty closely here in Kentucky. I feel we have an excellent chance of delivering at least two of the seats needed for the Democrats to take the House. Although our campaign at Streit for Congress ended prematurely, I am very pleased to report some excellent news from the Fourth Congressional District of Kentucky. In this district, we have former Congressman Ken Lucas who lost his seat keeping a promise to voters that was a self imposed term limit. He is running against freshman incumbent Republican Ron Lewis, and independent polling released by WCPO-TV in Cincinatti shows some very good news. Here is the report, borrowed from bluegrassreport.org:

According to an exclusive WCPO/SurveyUSA poll, Democrat Ken Lucas would retake his old seat from incumbent Republican Geoff Davis in Kentucky's 4th Congressional District if the election were held today.
...If the election were today, and you were standing in the voting booth right now, who would you vote for? Republican Geoff Davis? Democrat Ken Lucas? Or some other candidate?
41% Davis (R)
50% Lucas (D)
8% Undecided
...According to the poll: Democrats support Lucas by 7:1. Republicans support Davis by 4:1. Independents favor Lucas by 4:3
Also included is this analysis of the polling from Mark Nickolas:
I took a look inside the numbers and they are very encouraging for Lucas because the support comes from a very broad swath of voters. For instance, Lucas leads Davis in each of the four age groups and in each of the four educational-level categories. Also, while Davis gets 12% of Democrats, Lucas gets 19% of Republicans, and among Independents, Lucas has an 11-point lead (47-36).

Just to give you an insight in to who Geoff Davis is and what he represents:
Davis caught in war debate
Argument raised over comments
BY PATRICK CROWLEY | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
The contentious debate over when to withdraw American troops from Iraq has spilled over into Northern Kentucky's 4th Congressional District.
A Democratic group that focuses on veterans' issues has called on U.S. Rep. Geoff Davis, the Boone County Republican who represents the 4th District, to apologize for comments he made last week about the war and the Democrats' Congressional leadership.
Members of Democratic Veterans of Northern Kentucky said Davis unfairly attacked U.S. Rep. John Murtha, the Pennsylvania Democrat who caused a stir last week with his call for a quick military withdraw from Iraq.
"Even President Bush on Sunday toned down the attacks by GOP members on the Iraq war critics," said Roger Braden, a military veteran and member of the organization's steering committee. "(Davis) has dishonored himself and offended our veterans by attacking Congressman Murtha and all veterans who wish to have a dialogue about the war in Iraq," Braden said. "This conduct is unbecoming of a congressman and especially of a military veteran."
Davis, a former U.S. Army Ranger who served in the Middle East during the 1980s, spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives Friday during a vigorous debate about the withdrawal of troops.
Davis said terrorists "have made it quite clear in their internal propaganda that they cannot win unless they can drive the Americans out" of Iraq.
"And they know that they can't do that there, so they've brought the battlefield to the halls of Congress," he said. "And frankly, the liberal leadership has put politics ahead of sound, fiscal and national security policy. And what they have done is cooperated with our enemies and are emboldening our enemies."
Davis spokeswoman Jessica Towhey said Monday that Davis was not targeting Murtha but the Democrats' Congressional leadership.
"To say that Congressman Davis attacked Congressman Murtha is absolutely inaccurate," Towhey said.
"At no time did Congressman Davis direct his statements at Congressman Murtha.
Davis said last week that "the Democratic leadership has offered no leadership and no solutions, and they are putting politics ahead of policy. Their only statement is, 'Let's just run away.'"
Davis stands by his statement and has no intention of apologizing, Towhey said.
"To make an arbitrary call for withdrawal puts our troops in harm's way," Towhey said.
"The terrorists will just sit back and wait until the troops are gone, and that would lead to a very dangerous civil war in Iraq. Our troops have made great progress ... and Congressman Davis is proud of the work they have done," she added.
Towhey also pointed out that members of the veterans' organization are partisan Democrats that have been involved in campaigns for Democratic candidates, including presidential candidates John Kerry and Wesley Clark.
"We don't give much credence to this statement, but we're happy to talk about it," she said.

More on the Lucas lead in the fourth
Here is the article from the D trip C site on Lucas' lead in the Fourth District of Kentucky:
Jul 26, 2006
Kentucky Post - Lucas leading Davis in new poll
By Stephenie Steitzer
4th District Congressman Geoff Davis got fund-raising support from Vice President Dick Cheney two years ago. This year Republican candidates could see a trouble because of their party's leadership. The first independent poll on the 4th District congressional race shows Democrat Ken Lucas leading incumbent Republican Geoff Davis by nine points.
Lucas supporters were quick to trumpet the results of the WCPO/SurveyUSA poll, which asked 447 likely voters whom they would vote for if the election were held today.
"It comes as no surprise that Geoff Davis is trailing due to his abysmal record of stewardship and his defense of the status quo," Lucas campaign manager Jim Creevy said.
According to WCPO's Web site, 41 percent of respondents chose Davis, 50 percent chose Lucas and 8 percent were undecided.
The poll, which was conducted July 22-24, has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.7 points.
The Davis campaign responded by questioning the poll's accuracy.
Davis campaign manager Justin Brasell said WCPO officials confirmed the poll was automated, meaning that interviews were conducted after a recorded message was played, and the person being called then punched numbers on the telephone to respond.
"Automated polls, and SurveyUSA polls in particular, have been criticized for inaccuracy by both Democrats and Republicans alike," Brasell said.
Michael Baranowski, a political science professor at Northern Kentucky University, said he would feel more confident in the poll results once later independent poll results were released.
"Individual polls can be off, even way off," he said. "I would say it's certainly not a positive sign for the Davis campaign, but it's really going to be tough to say for sure until we see another couple of polls come out."
Still, Baranowski said he was surprised by the Lucas lead, in part because Davis has a huge fund-raising advantage.
According to campaign finance reports released earlier this month, Davis has raised more than $2.5 million and has three times as much money in the bank as Lucas, who has raised $734,000 so far.
"Given that big discrepancy, I think that's what really makes this surprising," Baranowski said.
Democrats point to the poll results as evidence that voters are connecting Davis to the Republican scandals in the state and federal government.
"It shows that the people of the 4th Congressional District are tired of the corruption in Washington, D.C. and Frankfort and they're looking for an independent, honest candidate and that's Ken Lucas," Kenton County Democratic Party Vice Chairman Nathan Smith said.
Republican candidates in Ohio aren't fairing much better in similar recent polls.
Democrat Ted Strickland led Republican Ken Blackwell by 20 points in the race to be Ohio's next governor in a poll conducted July 11-20 by the Columbus Dispatch.
And, Republican U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine trailed his opponent, Democratic U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown, by eight points in the same polls.
Those polls had margins of error of two points.

Ken Lucas is a former Congressman who has very positive name recognition in this district. He is further to the right than many on this site, but he represents a very Conservative district. He could very easily pick this seat up for the Democrats. Of Kentucky's six seats in the House, currently only one is held by Democrat, Ben Chandler in the 6th. Kentucky, along with many of our neighbor states in the midwest are where this election will swing our way if we pick up seats there. Right now it appears that two of the Democrats running in Kentucky, Ken Lucas and Mike Weaver have excellent chances of winning. Two other districts, one where Ann Northup has long been considered vulnerable and is running against Democrat John Yarmuth, and the 1st where former Congressman Tom Barlow rode a unusually large turnout to an impressive victory in the primary, look like they could go Democrat with a little hard work and luck. Look into the Congressional races in Kentucky and consider supporting some southern/midwest candidates that can win- and need our help!!!!
More from Kentucky
Polls are now showing Ken Lucas up four points in this race, after one showing him down four, and one showing him up eleven. The Lucas campaign maintains their polling shows them with a good lead. Check out this story about Rubber-stamp Ron Lewis, who evidently rubber-stamps for more than the administration:
Conservative Congressman Blocking Crackdown on Predatory Lenders Targeting U.S. Troops
Predatory lenders are seriously harming the U.S. military, and one member of Congress is fighting to keep it that way.
A Pentagon report last month found that as many one in five U.S. service members “are being preyed on by loan centers set up near military bases” that can charge interest of 400 percent or more. Increasingly, soldiers have debt levels so high they are barred from serving overseas; others suffer from “bankruptcies, divorces and ruined careers.”
The Pentagon has joined consumer, military, and veterans groups in backing a bipartisan amendment from Sens. Jim Talent (R-MO) and Bill Nelson (D-FL) that places a cap of 36 percent on high interest rates for short-term payday loans to military members.
But one conservative congressman, Rep. Geoff Davis (R-KY), is trying to gut the amendment. Davis has proposed his own language — praised by the payday lending industry — that sets no real limits on predatory lenders. One of Davis’s aides admitted last week that he consulted on the legislation with “CNG Financial of Mason, Ohio, one of his top campaign donors and owner of national payday lender Check ‘n Go.”

It seems that Ron Lewis wants to let his buddies and financial contributors fleece our troops. We need a new Congressman from Kentucky who has kept his word and fought for justice in the past. We need Ken Lucas!!!

We definately need Ken Lucas back in Congress!!!
How out of touch is Geoff Davis?
Check out his response to how many U.S. troops have died in Iraq this month:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EIP5H1bX4Y
It is disgraceful that a Congressman who voted for this war and has rubber-stamped every incompetent move of this administration doesn't even know how many young people have died this month for he and President Bush's failed policies. This would be a joke if it wasn't true!!!!
Anyone interested can watch this whole debate between Geoff Davis and Ken Lucas. Here is the link:

I think this debate successfully shows just how out of touch with everything Geoff Davis is. We desperately need Ken Lucas back in Congress to truly represent the people of his district, Kentucky, and America!!!!!
This race is razor-thin close!!!! Ken Lucas needs all the help he can get because millions of Repug $$$$ are flowing into this race. Please visit his site and show your support any way you can!!!!

Rich, disturbing video.
Geoff Davis can't even keep track of how many soldiers are dying in a war he supports??
Scary and dangerous, let alone detached from reality!
"Mere cannon fodder!" I guess he feels.
He would be a clown if he wasn't so dangerous!
"If being liberal means critical thinking and informed dissent, instead of blind obedience and ignorant nationalism, then I am all for it!"
Yes
It is. Sorry state that our once proud Kentucky has come to. I can't believe that this man is so blind to what is really going on.
Needless to say, this has been a very disappointing election cycle for me. Some of us really wanted to fight for the First district, but right now it seems like our efforts were in vain. That is why I have been trying to help other campaigns in KY even though I am not affiliated with them. I would love to blog on my own district candidate, but what do I have to write on him?? Nothing!!!!!!
I meant to hold back my total disgust until after the election, because I would hate to hurt a Democrat, or help a Republican, but I have gotten everything I so much feared in the primaries. Our candidate doesn't seem to be trying, and just expects his name to cause people to vote for him. He doesn't even seem to try and raise money. I am so tired of having to hold my nose and vote a straight Democrat ticket, but I am forced to yet again this year.
We really wanted to run a campaign holding a horrible Congressman accountable for his record, and change the attitudes of the Democrats here. Instead, the very people we so desperately wanted to help and represent voted against us because we didn't have enough money to let them know who we are. Now we are stuck with the same old that has lost our elections here time and time again.
I am so proud of the work Democrats across this country are putting in to win our Congress back. Unfortunately, we have taken a couple of steps backwards here in my own district, and I can't hide my disdain anymore!!!!!
All of this has just served to prove to me just how much work and effort it is going to take to bring this district back. It is even a more monumental task than I ever imagined. I once believed that a really good candidate with great ideas could overcome the fact that they weren't born of wealth and priviledge and do thier patriotic duty of truly representing the people in Congress. Now, I wonder how in the hell we can come up with enough money to get our message out next time, if we can even get a good candidate to run again.
Sorry to air my dirty laundry, but it is just so demoralizing to see Democrats all over the country fighting, and hopefully winning, while I am stuck beating a dead horse. While I will never give up the fight for what I believe, I owe that to all the men and women who have died for this country, and all my heroes such as JFK, and RFK, and FDR, I am truly humbled by the mountainous tasks that lies before me, and the rest of the activists here.
Best wishes to my Democratic brothers and sisters who are truly fighting to change this country. And to the Democrats in my district who want to help in this fight, in the immortal words of Keith Olberman, goodnight, and good luck!!!!!
