Frist Slips 'Poison Pill' to Minimum Wage Bill
This year it's tougher, because Republican Senators up for reelection may have to explain screwing working Americans in a more recent vote while, at the same time, managing to give themselves nine pay raises, totaling almost $32,000, in the same ten-year span. So Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) has found a new way to pull his Simon Legree act and this time it takes the form of attaching a "poison pill" amendment to Kennedy's S.AMDT.4322, which would gradually raise the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour over the next two years. A poison-pill is a procedural maneuver in which an onerous amendment is attached to a bill under consideration to force proponents of the original legislation to bail out and drop the whole issue. It's designed to either kill a bill entirely or create a situation that forces the other side into a negotiation to water down their original legislation to an unrecognizable point. And the best way for a Religious Right go-to guy like Frist to do that -- and to poke a sharp stick in the eye of Senate Democrats -- is to attach an anti-abortion bill, that must be voted on before the minimum wage measure. Frist's S.AMDT.4323 would criminalize the transport of a minor across state lines to get an abortion and Democrats have to contend with that before they can get to the minimum wage issue. Frist's intent is clear: To force r Have a headache yet? It's a disgusting thing to behold and another low for Republicans as they show they will stop at nothing to hold down wages on the people struggling most in our country. "Too many hard-working people are living on the edge--just one serious illness, one pink slip away from bankruptcy," said Kennedy in arguing for his bill on the Senate floor. "For minimum wage workers, the American dream is even further from reality. Minimum wage workers are men and women of dignity. They care for their children and for young children in daycare centers. They care for senior citizens in nursing homes. They check out groceries in the supermarket. They clean our office buildings. But the minimum wage they receive no longer covers their bills. A minimum wage worker who works 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, earns just $10,700. That is almost $6,000 below the poverty line for a family of three." The fact that at least 5.4 million more Americans, including one million children, have fallen into poverty since George W. Bush took office in 2000 seems to have no impact on Frist. "We have agreed to set aside amendments so that the Senator from Massachusetts can offer an amendment on the minimum wage, and I second-degreed that amendment with a child custody protection amendment," said Frist. "Our discussions have led to the understanding that after we figure out how we are going to address both the minimum wage and child custody protection over the course of this afternoon or tonight or tomorrow, we will get around to having a vote on the minimum wage issue." And, based on those ground rules, there's a very good chance that Kennedy and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) will decide to drop this incarnation of a minimum wage increase and fight that battle at a later date. I would ask how Frist sleeps at night but, as a Republican, I'm sure he sleeps just fine. Update (06/21/06 1:30 PM EDT): The Frist anti-abortion amendment to Ted Kennedy's (D-MA) attempt to raise the minimum wage has been withdrawn and Kennedy's bill, along with a faux bill to hike the wage rate by Mike Enzi (R-WY) have both been rejected. The Senate web site is reporting these votes somewhat inaccurately right now and I will post later on what really happened. Bottom line in that a minimum wage increase has at least temporarily been defeated. You can reach Bob Geiger at geiger.bob@gmail.com

Minimum wage bills are really up to the individual states...
the Feds aren't going to get one passed until they want one. Many of the states will not pass such a bill...others have already done so and will do so again.
Citizens of the individual states have found that it is better for the states to raise the minimum wage since such raises actually raise collected taxes. The states make more revenue from the raised wages than the political contributions by the opposition produce. And, a raise in min. wage makes their constituents happier.
I suspect that many of the red states workers are happy as hell to be making $5.15 an hour...otherwise the citizens would demand that such bills be passed.

Not me grinch
I live in red Ky, and we have the same minimum wage as the nation, $5.15. I have busted my butt for four years starting at one of the service-type jobs that now dominate all of Kentucky, except the populous Northern triangle. In four years, I have barely managed to work my way above the poverty level. Thank god I was accepted into college and have another year to go for a Batchelors. After that I plan on moving up, even if it means moving out of here. I have almost left several times, but this is my home and I want to stay and fight to turn things around here. We need to pound home the fact that the Congress and the Senate saw fit to raise their own salaries, but not millions of workers slaving in poverty. It is so demoralizing!!!
min wage 'poison pill'
until you so called "progressives" decide that the FIRST thing to do for the working poor is to stop TAXING them, and stealing the first dollar-plus of that $5.15 before they even see it (when at that rate of pay, even if they work full time all year, they will "owe" essentially nothing in taxes, while their FICA payments they may never live long enough to collect on!) ... I have nothing more to say on this subject.
A FICA Floor, plus an end to withholding ... then you can talk about raising this mythical 'minimum' (which only really concerns unions whose own rates are pegged to a multiple of it).
There are very few places where people are not making at least a buck or two an hour above that supposed minimum (except in food service, where tips are considered part of the paycheck), and even fewer situations where they continue to do so, if they show any ability to show up on time and do their jobs at least competently.1
If you really care about helping the poor, stop taxing them to death, along with the rest of us!
You lie.
Also if you feel strongly about your Libertarian beliefs:
Why do you live as a Communist and NOT pay your share of taxes?
Also why do you live as a welfare whore and NOT pay your share of taxes?
Pay your f@@@ing taxes Commmie
Or
Shut your ignorant mouth and learn the numbers.
How many are in your family
How many are in your family unit?
How much in taxes does your family pay?
I will not ask yet about your welfare sucking piece of shit job you call a contribution to this Nation.
We can get to that later.
Cat got your tongue?
Let’s talk about the amount of tax YOU pay and the amount you should pay as a NON Commie (by your own world view).
Democrats don't tax the
Liberal Democrats don't tax the poor.
We would not even tax the vast majority.
Conservatives and Libertarians do.
And by the way you are correct about the lameness of the min wage increase.
Steve the Commie Welfare Whore
Still waiting for some numbers…
Liberal Democrats call for ZERO taxes on necessities and higher taxes on Monopolies (either explicit or implicit) so stop fighting dinosaurs and Commies and listen up.
It is you, and your neocon
It is you, and your neocon buddies who have shifted the tax burden to the bottom 90% of wage-earners -- NOT the Democrats. Your idol, Dubya, has given free rides to the top 10% of the wealthy, and placed the tax burden squarely on the rest of us, AND our children, AND their children.
It sounds like you're okay with people "making a buck or two" above the minimum wage, while remaining below the poverty line, so that the "Friends of Dubya" Rangers can afford an extra yacht or two.
It isn't Democrats, or Progressives, who levy unreasonable taxes, it is you and your un-American pals who would rather spend the national treasury on an unnecessary and illegal war, than to pay decent wages to fellow Americans.
Eat a bug...
Another gutless Libertarian Hit and Run Poster.
Sigh...
Notice how they run when asked a question that reveals their "Commie Status"?
I might add, yet again, I am referring to THIER worldview.
Jim
He is to scared to reply. It appears you ran the commie off.... Good riddance!!!!
Quality Control on Trolls
Libertarians and Republicans refuse to live in reality. They suck the big thumb of Communism but see it as their mommy's teat. Revealing the truth is traumatic.
Can we get a rich Republican in here so I don’t have to keep repeating the tax thingy?
Also can we move up to a Nazi Scientist so I don’t have to keep busting on superstitious Republican idiots?
By the way, the lying Commie is welcome back to fill in the blanks. I just hope he does not continue with his 1950s arguments nor blame us for DLC Democrats.
Frist and his pills
Maybe Dr. Mr. Frist has some happy pills for Mr. Liberty Liver. If he really is a liberty lover, he can't spell. If he likes living in liberty, his name doesn't clearly convey that message. Maybe only his liver likes liberty. We can tell that his heart lacks a soul and his brain lacks a conscience. I guess that the working people need only to be given a sack lunch for a day's work. The MBA types must being taught that the only people who count in a corporation are the blessed stockholders( those might risk takers) and the CEO'S ( the ones who just take). Thw workjers should just be happy to eat lunch or share it with their children. They shouldn't have children at all because they can't afford them. I like most of the liberals here pay my share of taxes and do so to support a country that I believed cared about its citizens. I am sickened to know that now most of my tax dollars go to support an illegal war. Dr, Mr. Frist needs to swallow a poison pill. Remember he is the compassionate conservative who is accused of inside trading because he sold the family stock when his hospital chain lost money because their payor mix included too many people on medicaid or self-pay types. He is the milk of human kindness and a real role model for the profession. He doesn't want people to be paid enough to even get health insurance. The poor should just die quickly if they are ill and decrease the surplus population. Are there no poorhouses now? What happened to us?
