Gov. Blanco (D-LA) Signs Law Banning Abortion

Governor Kathleen Blanco of Katrina-ravaged Louisiana recently signed a law banning abortions, including those for rape and incest, except for cases where the mother's life is in danger. The Louisiana law will take effect if Roe v. Wade is overturned. Medicaid requires abortion funding, and Louisiana's new law, if enacted, will allow those exceptions. Blanco cited overwhelming support for the law and noted the pending law reflects her own personal convictions. She did qualify that by hoping for a new law providing choice for rape and incest victims. Blanco, like recently re-elected New Orleans' Mayor Ray Nagin, was the subject of intense controversy regarding her role in the pre-planning and aftermath of Katrina. Blanco's term expires in 2007, but a recall petition was begun on January 10, 2006 and will end July 9, 2006 after the 180 day statutory limitation. What will the outcome be?

Blanco is a thug and a fraud

Blanco, like so many of the so-called "Blue Dog" democrats is a fraud. She called herself a Democrat just as a pretext to get on the LA ticket. But few of her actions suggest she is anything but a Bushie rightwing sellout. Look at her pathetic performance during Katrina. Not only did she pass the buck on acting decisively before, during and immediately after the storm, she officially authorized brutal mercenaries from Blackwater USA to take the law in Nola into their own hands. These troops - 150 in all, ran roughshod over residents for weeks. See the firsthand account by Jeremy Scahill at LeftTurn:

I find it appalling...

that there are women out there, like
Blanco and in our government on top
of it, that feel because they wouldn't
have an abortion, they have the right
to deny other women their choice. The
person that knows what is best for
oneself and there situation.
Yet these same women turn their backs
on children that are loved and wanted
- just starving- because there single
parent can't earn enough money to
support them withouta little assistance
from the government. Why is their
such a disconnect in their minds?
Is it money, power or what? I HOPE
THEY GIVEBLANCO THE BOOT NEXT
ELECTION - she is a traitor to
her kind.

The right of choice for every woman

It's usually women like this who have the perfect family who want to take away other women's rights to live the life that they choose or to make their own healthcare choices. Increasingly, there are more women raped and or impregnated thru incest, and any law that requires a victim to bear her perpetrator's child is a travesty.
You can always tell the real empathy or lack of it when there is no discussion or public debate on how unwanted pregancies might affect a girl or woman's health and might lead to even a higher mortality rate than we have now. If you want to require births from every pregnancy, then fund the prenatal care, the birth in a medical facility, the well visits of the baby, and provide the mom with temporary housing, daycare, and training for a job. If you do not provide for those girls and women who are abused and misused by men and left pregnant with no resources, then how can you pretend to be moral and pro-life? When a sick patient has to make a difficult choice between her health if she has high blood pressure along with other illnesses or treatments or bearing a child that has an unlikely outcome proven by prenatal testing or medical knowledge, that choice should be hers, not our government's.
