Ralph Reed Pimped Child Sex Slavery

There is a special place in Hell for Ralph Reed, who is still running for Lt. Gov. of Georgia, as part of his plan to win national office in the near future. Reed's Democratic opponent, Greg Hecht, has never pimped child sex slavery. Support Hecht here. From the Pentagon Post:

In August 1999, political organizer Ralph Reed's firm sent out a mailer to Alabama conservative Christians asking them to call then-Rep. Bob Riley (R-Ala.) and tell him to vote against legislation that would have made the U.S. commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands subject to federal wage and worker safety laws.

Now those seven-year-old words are coming back to haunt Reed, the former executive director of the Christian Coalition and a candidate for the Republican nomination to be Georgia's lieutenant governor.

"The radical left, the Big Labor Union Bosses, and Bill Clinton want to pass a law preventing Chinese from coming to work on the Marianas Islands," the mailer from Reed's firm said. The Chinese workers, it added, "are exposed to the teachings of Jesus Christ" while on the islands, and many "are converted to the Christian faith and return to China with Bibles in hand."

A year earlier, the Department of the Interior -- which oversees federal policy toward the U.S. territory -- presented a very different picture of life for Chinese workers on the islands. An Interior report found that Chinese women were subject to forced abortions and that women and children were subject to forced prostitution in the local sex-tourism industry.

It also alleged that the garment industry and other businesses set up facilities on the Northern Marianas to produce products labeled "Made in the USA," while importing workers from China and other Asian countries and paying them less than U.S. minimum wage under conditions not subject to federal safety standards.

Lisa Baron, a spokeswoman for Reed's campaign, said Millennium Marketing "was hired as a direct-mail subcontractor to assist in encouraging grass-roots citizens to promote the propagation of the gospel."

"As a defender of the unborn, Ralph was unaware of any allegations regarding inhumane or illegal treatment of workers, and he would strongly object to such practices, if true," she added.

Reed's close friend and political ally, disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, represented the commonwealth as a partner of Greenberg Traurig. The islands' government paid Abramoff $4.04 million from 1998 to 2002. Greenberg Traurig hired Millennium Marketing to print the mailing.

Reed is running for the GOP nomination against state Sen. Casey Cagle. The old mailing was brought to a reporter's attention by former employees of Reed, who said the support on behalf of Northern Marinas leaves their former boss exposed as a hypocrite.

The Mariana mailing adds another hurdle to Reed's campaign, which already has been plagued by the disclosures that Abramoff paid Reed more than $4 million to conduct grass-roots lobbying on behalf of Indian casinos seeking to prevent potential competitors from getting approval to open new facilities.

Update 1: Cheryl S adds some extremely important - and unreported - info below about Reed's opposition to the UN Convention for the Rights of the Child.

Update 2: Christy Hardin Smith has more.

Reed Has Long history of promoting Child Slavery

There is much more evidence that Reed is a promoter of child slavery.

Ralph Reed spearheaded the move by the rightwing wacko "Christian Coalition" (Christian in name only, not practice!) to lobby AGAINST the UN Convention for the Rights of the Child. The Convention was created to combat the exploitation of children - especially the use of children as sex slaves, soldiers, and sweat shop laborers. Yet Reed and cohorts lobbied against it! Their superficial excuse for opposing the Convention was sick enough: They claimed it would "undermine parental authority." Ie, it might infringe on the rights of rightwing Christian parents to beat their kids. I kid you not - corporal punishment strong enough to "make the child cry" - is called for Reed's "spiritual leader" James Dobson.

But I suspect the REAL reason that Reed lobbied against the Convention is because it might undermine his corporate supporters' easy access to cheap child slave labor overseas. The same reason Reed used the Christian coalition to block the passage of child-protective laws in the Marianas. You're right, Bob, they're gettin' a special extra-hot spot in Hell stoked up for Reed.

But, in any case, thanks to Reed, et al, the US had the shame of being the only developed nation NOT to ratify the Convention.

I've found the christian's of the Bush persuasion, like TALON NEWS (GOPUSA.ORG) homosexual reporter (using the assumed 'Jeff Gannon'), are people who leave a lot to be desired or appreciated.

Of course if 'fruit' produced is a guideline for judging, then the christians of the Bush persuasion indeed is full of 'fruits'.

Support our Troops, bring them home... then send the fruit's to Iraq.

Senator Conrad Burns (R MT)

MARIANA ISLANDS —

BURNS CHANGED HIS MIND ON BILL AFTER $5,000 DONATION:

The Saipan Garment Manufacturers Association and the Northern Mariana Islands hired Abramoff in 2001 “to stop legislation aimed at cracking down on sweatshops and sex shops in the American territory, which is known as the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.”

In February, Abramoff donated $5,000 to Friends of the Big Sky, Burns’s political action committee and his firm, Greenberg Traurig, in March donated another $2,000.

On April 20, 2001, an employee of a a major Saipan garment manufacturer, “donated $5,000 to Friends of the Big Sky.”

In 1999, Burns voted for a bill that “would have broadened federal oversight of immigration and labor rules on the islands.”

On May 23, 2001, one month and three days after the $5,000 donation, Burns voted against the exact same bill and took the unusual step of calling for a roll call vote, so that his vote was recorded.

Burns “and his staff met Jack Abramoff’s lobbying team on at least eight occasions” around the deal.

Links are FUBAR

It would be helpful if the links below the article were in the order they actually were posted - for example, it would be hard to tell what the two links by rtpricetag and kwahlf were referring to if you didn't read the first comment (mine - Cheryl S.) first. Also, when you click on the link to Cheryl S.'s comment after the article ("Update #1") the comment does not appear - and it is extremely important information about Reed and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Cheryl how do you have

your settings set up? If you look at settings under the first post you will see some options for setting up the way that pages look on your screen. If you set it to threaded list expanded and then either first post first or last post first it should be easier for you to figure out who posted when and in answer to what. Of course if the post is not in reply to another post then it is harder to know what it might be in reference to.

I hope that helps.

Thanks, Di

You're right - somehow or other my settings got shifted - I set it back to the "threaded, expanded" setting - it seems easiest to follow

Glad to be of help Cheryl.
