Hats Off to Senators Kerry and Kennedy

As disappointing as it is to lose the fight on the Alito Supreme Court nomination, it’s also getting old listening to people on our own side running down the efforts of someone like John Kerry, who tried to do the right thing by leading on the filibuster. I’ve read too much commentary lately saying that Kerry acted as an opportunist, proposing the eleventh-hour filibuster only because he knew it would not be sustained – with the theory being that he would get “credit” for being willing to block Alito but, because it would never come to fruition, would not have to pay a long term political price for the action.

While, I believe the filibuster fight should have been initiated weeks ago, what criticism would have gone to Kerry and Senator Ted Kennedy if they had done nothing? They would have been ripped for that too.

While the battle was joined too late, they at least put up a fight and got the objections many of us have to Alito more strongly on the record.

I’m not sure where we go from here with the 19 spineless weasels in the Democratic party who helped assure Alito’s confirmation by voting against the filibuster, but I am sure we should at least extend some degree of credit where it is due.

So I say thank you to Senators Kerry and Kennedy for fighting back on our behalf.

Support of John Kerry

There has already been an editorial in the New York Post about the failure of his "flopibuster". And jokes from Fox news about him coming back from "skiing" to help with the flilibuster. Our own gutless party members need to pay the price with our votes and our money.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

If the Dems who betrayed us don't pay the price

They will have every reason to do it again. Which has been the pattern for far far too long.

Tell the Party,

Not the choir! I called Sen. Nelson (Bill in Florida) explained we're activists, we were part of the group, Florida Fair Elections, that defeated E-Machines in Volusia, and set im motion Leon County to prove Diabold can be rigged!

I called his office here, in Florida, and D.C.; and the State DNC, and the DNC, in Washington; I made it real clear: NOT ANOTHER DAMN DIME, for the Party, until they Remove these Traitors from the Party's ticket! Why should we support through the Party, canidiates that vote like Repugs. in Blue?

I will go to every speech, Nelson makes and tell everyone there; he's a traitor, a coward, and a Turncoat! Thanks to the likes of him, we'll all be loosing ALL our civil rights over the next two years!

To add insult to injury, the DCCC, is bragging about supporting the Fax network by buying air time!!!!

Even his own people don't know

I personally called every one of Bill Nelson's offices here in Florida and in DC to discuss the confirmation hearing as well as the filibuster. I got pretty much the same message from each office regarding the hearing and his vote but on the subject of filibuster I got a different answer from each office. One office said the Senator was undecided while another said he was considering voting for the filibuster. Most however were similar in that the Senator was afraid that a filibuster would further alienate the Republicans and exacerbate the partisanship in the Senate.

My response was and still is, How the hell can it become any more partisan than it is now?

This attitude is how we got into this hole in the first place. Time to vote out the nice guys and get some street fighters onboard. I made it very clear that I intend to work for and contribute to anyone that opposes Nelson in the primary and if he wins anyway I may have to vote for him over the Sarasota "bitch of the Baskervilles" but he will not see a penny of support.

Personally, I am sick of the Casper Milktoast Democrats running in fear at the first sight of a frown on a Pug face. It's not good enough to take back the Senate, I want it taken back by people with cajones.

"The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all."

Good for the 25 Cloture opponents

First, I appreciate Kerry, Kennedy, Boxer, Feingold, and all the others who voted against Cloture.

Second, I think we need to consider whether we could be putting poor Howard Dean in too much of a bind. The DLC-centrist-types have been attacking Dean by saying that he isn't raising enough money. If progressives stop giving money to the DNC because we're angry at Byrd, Conrad, and the Nelsons, then Dean will raise less money and the DLC will take the opportunity to kick Dean harder.

I'm not saying that we should give the DNC money no matter what they do. I'm also not claiming that the universe revolves around Howard Dean. But this stuff can get complicated.

I don't give a hoot if the

I don't give a hoot if the DLC goes flat broke.

Most of these DEMS are turncoats and sell outs. No money to them. None.

And I wish people on this site would stop worshipping the 25 who voted against cloture. They had to be begged by us; that is rediculous; we should not have to beg and make thousands of phone calls to do the right thing.

Hillary Clinton is not a true democrat; did everyone on this site forget about that? For Christ sake; she's been hobnobbing with repugs and supports the Iraq war.

Wake up!

It is not about worshipping,

It is not about worshipping, it is about shepherding and influence.

DNC and DLC are two different organizations!

I would like to see the DLC (Democratic Leadership Council) go broke. They capitulate constantly, and Al From is utterly vile.

The DNC (Democratic National Committee) under Howard Dean is another matter. I support Dean, who opposed Alito from the beginning, and he obviously supported the filibuster.

The DLC keeps calling Dean a "leftist" (WTF?!?!) and whining that he doesn't raise as much money as McAuliffe did.

I don't want to help Al From's DLC savage Dean.

These acronyms throw people off. I wish the DNC would re-name itself.

Actually, it is the DLC that

Actually, it is the DLC that has tagged itself with a misnomer. They are neither elected "leaders," nor are they representative of mainstream Democrats. Al From should be sued for misrepresentation.

If you would take the time

If you would take the time to look around this blog, you will find that we are not supporting DLC Democrats. We do, however, support Howard Dean and the DNC.

As for your comment about "begging" our representatives, I didn't observe a a pleading tone in any of our correspondence to them -- they were demands. And that is what patriots do -- demand fair representation. Politicians are not mind readers, and they need our guidance. Those who do not listen however, need to be replaced.

D. Feinstein was running scared.

She turned around and saw Cindy Sheehan running close behind her. H. Clinton is a DLC'er. H. Reid protested at first and didn't provided the necessary leadership. He could have pressed harder and would have made the difference. And what is wrong with Obama?

Feinstein is a corporate whore...has been...

for at least the last 6 years. I hope that Cindy runs against her and replaces her.

Feinstein did vote against cloture.

But there were far more issues that I disagreed with:.

While I agree with the President’s goal ofreducing the supply of oil from the Persian Gulf, the very first thing we should be doing to break the ‘addiction to oil’ is to increase fuel economy standards for cars, trucks and SUVs.
There are now 46 million people in America without health insurance, but the President’s proposal to expand Health Savings Accounts would help very few of these people. Most of them cannot afford to save and the President’s plan fails to address how they would get some kind of coverage.
I am also concerned about the rising deficit. The President inherited a budget surplus of $236 billion from President Clinton, the largest surplus in American history. The deficit is now projected to be $337 billion in 2006, not counting new hurricane and war-related spending. The total national debt was $5.7 trillion in 2001, and if the tax cuts are made permanent it could reach $11.3 trillion by 2010. We cannot afford to continue down this path of fiscal irresponsibility.”

We shouldn't have to

We shouldn't have to influence a Democrat to be a democrat.

Your criticism is valid, but

Your criticism is valid, but you are missing my point.

We have to bring together a hundred million people.

They are bound to be different.

So too with leaders.

It is our obligation to succeed and dismantling to the ground may be impossible. I would argue that dismantling to a point where we can rebuild and YES coerce a few mild fences sitters is both morally and strategically correct.

Don’t forget that a kind of hypnosis falls over people, both followers and leaders, as the other side advances. There is no need for purity. There is only a need for total victory with flawed individuals.
