Democacy in America is deadI cannot for the life of me figure out why our Senators are selling us down the road , They're going to sit idolly by why democracy dies , Fuck the constitution after today it will mean nothing anymore , Bush should just go ahead and declare his Monarchy , I am so ashamed of the Democrats in the Senate , Tomorrow I'm going to the courthouse and changing my political affiliation to (I) My wife and I discussed last night liquidating our assets in the U.S. denouncing our citizenship and leaving the country for good , This is not the America I grew up in and after today it's not one I would envy anyone to have to endure , All is lost !!

If you do leave; I can
If you do leave; I can understand why!! The thought has run through my head thousands of times. If I really think I could do it financially I probably would be gone by now.
I really do not think this country will ever be right again.
Make sure you don't go to a country that Bush and Co want to bomb the shit out of.
Archaeocrat back with some tidings.
I predicted this stuff about 2 years ago when some of the old mods harrassed me off the site.
I kept reiterating a very, very simple point over and over again: the DLC and "conservative" Dems suck at the same corporate money tit that feeds the fascists.
So they voted for the folks that sign the checks. Big surprise.
When the Dems are finished with the cancerous DLC and other Thugs in Dem clothing (where's the Democratic version of the DLC on their side? You know, conscientious liberal Republicans that vote against the chimp) there are legion numbers of smart, motivated, and angry Democrats out here willing to be involved.
But here's the catch: some of you are going to all have to get used to following much more than you have been. Not all thinkers and not all thoughts are equal; some are better than others. We need to start watching the blogs. Josh Marshall is going to flip Publican. You heard it here first. Start reading Kos and Huff more often. And hit DU for the rabid left's take. Like it or not, the hard left is where the energy is and the DLC just shot itself in the arse today.
Rant over.
Well I don't know about 2
Well I don't know about 2 years ago, but for a full year the DLC has been on this blogs shit list.
Yo
They weren't Bob or other real Dems. It was a collection of folks that celebrated the internal divisions of Democratic politics. Once was a musician in Oregon. The other one had a very "fluffy" moderator name, like Phishy or something to that effect.
The thugs won with hardcore ideology. It's long past time for some La Follette progressivism, and ranting the likes of Eugene Debs, which is not a dirty name. The Left is still out there if the Dems ever regain sanity.
Arch was a disrupter then...and obviously is a disrupter now...
He has been escorted to the edge of the world and dropped off again.
Thats why I have been
Thats why I have been emailing every elected official I can get my hands on and encourage them to rise up at the State of the Union address and WALK OUT!! Never has been done in history and its a perfect moment and venue for the Democrats to at least show some guts, passion, and resolve and turn their backs on Bush and simply walk out in an uproar!!
Imagine the headlines the next day...imagine the spark that could be united if democrats would just get enough guts and turn the chamber upside down and scream in unison to "IMPEACH THIS LIAR!!!
I get chilly willies up my spine just thinking about how perfect that scene would be!!
I agree. But there are only
I agree.
But there are only a handful of them that actually have the spine and courage to do it. The rest; including most of the democrats; are in Bush's back pocket.
If a large number of them did do it I would fall right on the floor and have a stroke.
at this point I would settle
at this point I would settle for just one gutsy democrat to just that. That ONE person would become the instant hero of damn near an entire Nation.
In fact if any one of them is thinking about running in 2008 that best way and most profound that person could do is fly dead center into the storm. If its only ONE, that ONE will forever be remembered.
Yep, that'll really show
Yep, that'll really show 'em. Let's just all give up and move to a country where there isn't any political turmoil. Let's just abandon the Democratic Party and become "Independents." Let's just let the neocons have the USA and destroy the Constitution. Let's take our ball and go home.
Boy, will THEY be sorry after we're gone.
P.S. Actually, democracy is alive and well in America, and this blog is solid proof of that fact.
well Bill unfortunately we
well Bill unfortunately we only have one "independent" in the Senate so we are left with no choice but to presure the democrats for even a shot.
And democracy is not alive and well...in fact it is extremely ill and damn near drawing its last breath.
The United States of
The United States of America has withstood stonger tests than this, and has survived. This PNAC-controlled administration has attempted to subvert our Constitution, but their illegal chickens are coming home to roost.
The sky is not falling and although some, like you, insist that we are "near the end," nothing could be further from the truth. The power to correct the transgressions of this administration remains with the People, and the Constitution is still intact.
When we allow our focus to become so narrow that each setback is viewed as "the final defeat," we become the enemy of all that America stands for. Americans are known the world over for their resilience, innovation, and never-give-up attitude. Blaming someone else for our current state-of-affairs is the easy way out, but a cabal of PNAC neocon politicians could not have gotten this far without the apathy and tacit support of those who do nothing.
It seems to me then, that our job is to continue to spread the word, and convince those Middle Americans who are the People, that they have been lied to and misled. Switching Party affiliations, moving to another country, and wringing our hands about the "imminent defeat" of democracy will accomplish absolutely nothing.
Patriots do not run from the fight to preserve their freedoms -- cowards do.
well said
:)
interesting and certainly
interesting and certainly spirited and I wish all this was true. If we treat any of this as its just another passing challenge or just a temporary setback, I think we have missed the entire point.
We have certainly had challenges and moments in our history where wrongs were made right but I hardly think any of that has been on the scale of Iraq, ordained torture and renditions, stolen elections, spying, and the Patriot Act. These are mainly post 9-11 reactions that have undermined the global stage, fundamental drivers of democracy, and a rapidly approaching theocracy on scales never before seen.
We are kidding ourselves if we treat otherwise. This is not something that will be resolved at the voting booth which is also totally corrupted. So I think we could convince millions (are they not yet convinced?) but thats not going to do it.
Today in the polls, most Americans apparently are A-OK with Bush and spying and they are equally A-OK with Alito. Thats very frightening to me and I think it is important to recognize where we are really at right now
You doom-sayers will be the
You doom-sayers will be the death of our Party, and our nation, and not the temporary hired-help in Washington.
I will not waste my time with refuting each of your points individually, but your statement that "most Americans" are satisfied with Dubya and his mis-leadership is ludicrous. If you were to change that to "most religious-right, aristocratic-Americans," you may be correct.
Instead of focusing on the problems, we should be focusing on solutions. Do you have any solutions to offer us? If you would take the time to research the many previous posts on this subject, you will find that there have been solutions suggested, and we are acting on many of them.
You are entitled to your opinion, but not your own facts. And, you are very close to violating at least one of the Rules of this blog: http://www.democrats.com/rules See the third Rule in particular.
Bill...when you say we
Bill...when you say we should be focused on the solutions and not the problem I am curious as to what you might offer in the way of solution at this point. And I ask this not as a challenge but as one who is literally out of solutions. And for the moment, lets assume that the voting booth is now compromised...which it is. As I said yesterday, if anyone believes for a moment that those who hold the real power now behind Bush are going to let something so trivial to them as an election knock them from power they are kidding themselves. I dont see this a being a defeatist but as you say the facts cant be changed.
So....assuming it really does not matter what is done in terms of realigning the vote as the conclusion is already scripted what is left in way of solution? This is the SIGNIFIGANCE of the tampering in Florida and Ohio. The one mighty weapon we had has been taken. What should be done now?
Soros should buy Diebold.
Seriously, we need to dig up some rich democrat somewhere to go buy up all the elections software machine companies. Once that happens, watch as the republicans scurry to the gates to craft legislation making it illegal for a political party/an elected official to hold interest in elections machine software.
Why do they fear a ballot
Why do they fear a ballot box with a paper trail. That is the ONLY way to verify the vote. I have spent the past 5 years doing everything I can to make this the real issue to focus on but paper ballots are now a thing of the past. Not going to happen...for obvious reasons.
I just read "Fooled Again" and I cant see why this Nation just ignores what happened in Ohio 04. I would guess that as Kerry waved the white flag despite the loud protesting NOT to surrender from Edwards that everyone thought since Kerry wont challenge it why should the media or anyone else.
Utterly pathetic. I met Kerry in 04 and Edwards as well. I think has Edwards been on the top of the ticket, what happened in Ohio would have been the National story.
What percentage of those
What percentage of those that voted for Kerry were passionate?
If the electorate remains in a malaise of “both parties are the same” then no uproar will be forthcoming.
The goal shall ever be:
To win polls everywhere on the roll of government, and to get disparate groups to both see their common needs and NOT require that they be met concurrently.
You can only cheat around the margins. The above does not allow for that.
After all
We are not just laying down and dying. We have fought Bush on every front this year, and we have won a couple in case they haven't noticed. Our unity as Democrats have won us these victories. Leaders, true leaders, like Teddy, Boxer, Conyers and Pelosi have led us at every turn. Even John Edwards has admitted his mistake in his vote for the war and is fighting against Alito. Turning Independent or leaving the country is not Democratic, or American, it is cowardly. I for one will continue to fight with every ounce of strength I can muster. I owe it not only to my fellow Dems. and my besieged country, but to the great men and women that have fought for my freedom and died. When I think of the Great Democrats such as Wilson, FDR, JFK, and RFK, who stood for all that was great about our country in the last century alone, It stregthens my resolve. Their efforts will be in vain over my dead body.
Bill, as always said with supreme intellect
Bill, as always said with supreme intellect and wisdom! We must continue to fight, scratch and claw at the very fiber that holds the PNAC and the Bush admin. together till they are in shreds.
I have spent the ENTIRE day, emailing, calling and faxing Senators to filibuster Alito!
I even had my wife on the phone to every female Senator's office, demanding they protect women's rights and not only to vote no on Alito, but to filibuster him till Bush gives up!
"The first casualty when war comes is truth."
Thanks for all that you do
Thanks for all that you do Frank. Mixing a couple of quotes: even if the Fat Lady sings, it ain't over 'til it's over.
Agreed Bill and Frank
Now is the time for all true patriots to come to the aid of their country. The thought of leaving has crossed my mind too, but the best thing is to stay and FIGHT!!!! We must continue to expose the right wing hypocrites. We must take back Congress, and the WH. True a shitload of damage has been done, but no more than when FDR took over our country, and look what he accomplished. Everybody that wants someone to walk out of the State of the Fascist Union speech should write Teddy, he's our best bet to do that. He knows they were in with who killed his brothers and hates the Bush's guts. I wrote him, all of you do the same!!!!!
I agree Bill
The U.S. has faced many, many challenges in the past and has come out standing. But not without a heavy price. You're so right when you say we are no where near the end, infact this is only the beginning. People have plenty to be worried about right now however. The last internal struggle worse than this that the United States overcame was the civil rights movement. But that took 100 years just to gain any real momentum and only after enduring a fiery and bloody start.
In many ways, present day U.S. can be compared to pre-civil war America. Strong political divisions. Battles for civil rights, freedom and balance are waged everyday in the American legislature, not all that disimalr to the climate of 1850's America. In the American Civil War, it only took one liberal president getting elected to break the cammal's back.
The reason so many people, my self included, have good reason to be scared out of their mind is because of the extreme polarization of political views in the U.S. When you add in the fact that this administration is so currupt and they are in total power of the government for the time being makes matters even worse. People are scared because the last time people were this polarized, the U.S. erupted in civil war, which was followed by over 100 years of struggle for civil equality.
Just to give you an idea of how scarry this thought really is, I offer you the casualty rates of the civil war. According to http://www.civilwarhome.com/casualties.htm the civil war alone saw the death of 620,000 Americans. During that time, there were roughly 31,000,000 people in America (http://www.fsmitha.com/h3/h46-am.htm). Thats 2% of the population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are 300,000,000 people in the U.S. 2% of that is 6,000,000 people. If that does't scare you, I don't know what will. So yeah, people are scared for good reason right now. People never want to have to go through that much bloodshed again. Especially people like me who would be in the age group fighting another civil war in the future if one did actually errupt (god I hope not).
I would consider myself a history enthusiast, if not buff, and the most terrafying pattern in history, at least that I've noticed, is that it repeats itself, often. And war is very much in human nature. We can say all we want about how we are so much more civilized now and we are protected from all harm by our laws, but it doesn't take much for a society to fall into total chaos and we would only be kidding ourselves, whether we know it or not. Just ask the Romans, Greeks, Germans, Russians, Persians, Jews, Syrians, French, English, Chinese, Vietnamese, Koreans, Spanish, and any other mighty nation in the worlds history that has fallen apart before. Ask Americans of the mid 1860's. Hell, ask someone who lived through hozings in Selma, Alabama back in the 1960's. It doesn't take much for a civilization to collapse into anarchy, and right now, the political and social conditions in America could easily be read as a foreshadowing for the possible chaos yet to come. So before you go around saying that people who say they want to move out of the U.S. are cowards and are just abondoning Democracy, try a little harder to understand where they are coming from. I myself have no intention of ever leaving this country, but it can be easily inderstood why people would be talking like this right now.
I guess maybe this is just one more freaked out person's view on the possible danger America could be in. It would be wise, however, to learn from the past and not to ignore it. When we do that, we are only hurting ourselves and spelling out our own demise. Maybe instead of always just saying that we are protected by the constitution and there is no reason to believe the country is in crisis, you should stop and think about the possible dangers we might actually be in. The counrty has taken a hard turn to the right, and laws are only good so long as the people who are in control choose to follow the laws.
And in response to the title of this blog "Democracy in America is dead" I think a more appropriate title would be Democracy is under attack in America. As long as people like those who attribute to this blog are around and fighting, it ain't dead yet.
I'm not trying to widen the
I'm not trying to widen the partisan divide here, but we have been burned many times by Republicans who appear Liberal.
Working within the system must be MADE to work correctly again, if the Constitution is to prevail. We are a nation of laws, and the foundation of all American law is the Constitution. It is also the foundation of all that is American, and the freedoms that go with being lucky enough to be born here.
If we can not "fix" the problems from within the system, then we will have abandoned over 200 years of learning and growth in this evolving experiment in democracy. We will have also made meaningless the lives given to protect and serve this noble experiment.
"Thinking outside the box" IS the American way of solving problems, and always has been. American ingenuity is alive and well, and so is the American spirit. We were caught napping, and the PNAC neocons took advantage of our fear and frustration after 9/11. Americans are now waking up to that fact, and your presence on a Democratic activist blog is encouraging.

Hi Pepper,
Though not often recognized, all creativity stems from restriction.
Did you mean to put down Republican in your profile? You sound more like a fed up American Democrat.

So there could be a filibuster, but the DEMs won't take a chance of exposing the DINOs in the party who won't vote for a filibuster?
That's right
Our dems are protecting the DINOs. It does sound bad, but look at it this way: If they're protecting them, perhaps they are very well aware that the base is sick of their bs.
Or - maybe they don't want them to get anthrax in the mail. Who knows?
Democrats In Name Only
Democrats In Name Only
I hate to jump in on the negative side (reality) but...
Once Bush has the supreme court what good will it do to spread the word? I mean the court can as we all agree decide elections, now Bush can wiretap us. Get the word out? I predict Bush will be sending reporters to jail or breaking the wiretap story. Yet our Senators are ignoring our emails and phone calls and are willing to let this happen. Alito has to be stopped or it is over!
But it's not over yet...
until they vote for closure.
Babies
Babies are born.
It's never over.
Aw Jim, under current management...
babies may have to be outsourced.
crap!
Where can you go to get some of that work?
I have to agree with
I have to agree with MGB.
The reason I stated I would go if I could is because this whole thing that's been going on for 5 years has literally and I mean literally damaged my soul; has made me physically sick, angry, and depressed. I don't think I can take much more of it.
And what are we to do? The elections in this country (and many others) are totally rigged.
Everyone is looking forward to the 2006 elections. I'm not. It's already in the bag.
Sadly, Alito will get confirmed.
Our representatives DO NOT LISTEN TO US!
The Alito hearings are a huge circus and extremely embarassing.
I hear ya.
I guess we are not guaranteed a lifetime pocket of peace on earth. We all probably need to look at how others from centuries past dealt with far greater horrors (so far).
I was thinking just this
I was thinking just this morning that I have far more fear of the day to day consequences living under Bush then I do from terrorists.
I really resent the fact that a single horrific event has resulted in the fascist state Bush has put us in. Bin Laden has the capability of screwing up your day, Bush has screwed up our very lives. I really resent that.
Pepper, bio shows you are a republican...
Pepper, your bio shows you are a republican, yet you seem to be speaking out against Bush. Is this your official position? Are you one of the many Americans that now see Bush is not a republican, but a criminal at the highest level?
If so, welcome back over from the darkside!
Now, can you help us to educate your republicans friends that Bush is a supreme liar, a tyrant, a thug and a power-hungry dictator?!
Ps. and by the way...he is NOT a Christian...no where close!
Pss. IMO, you won't find may Warner supporters here, either. Just look at our latest poll.

all you have to do is read page 51 of the PNAC document.
The entire 91 page document can be found at Ray Taliaferro's site:

For those who don't know Ray, he is an early morning talk show host on KGO San Francisco.
That is why I added the "so far". ;)
This thread reminds me of that old saying:
Nothing matters and what if it did?
Don't let anyone forget, Republicanism holds the seeds of its own defeat:
- It burns out.
- The cycle of Democratic build up begins.
- With peace, and cash in pocket, people can entertain any myth they like –including Republicansim.
- The fleecing occurs.
- Lather
- Rince
- Repeat
What Bush has planned for women
10 kids and a low paying job at Wal-marts selling cheap stuff from slave labor in china, with no health care for the kids. And a jail cell for each child. "No child left behind. " How our senators can let this happen is beyond me.
