Despite Iraq Election, Bush Poll Numbers on Iraq Fall

Juan Cole writes:

The American public is not in a mood to be swayed by mere speeches or yet more "milestones" like the election in Iraq. All the recent brouhaha has not improved Bush's poll numbers.

As always, it is best to click on the link to poll results, which give a comparison between early December and more recently. A solid majority of 61 percent disapprove of his handling of the war in Iraq, and his rating on this matter has actually fallen two percentage points since early December. Likewise, more Americans (52%) think going to war in Iraq now was a mistake than thought so two weeks ago (48%).

Half of Americans think neither side is winning, and 9 percent think that the guerrillas are winning. Together, that makes 59% who think that the US is not winning. That is the key point. Bush had to convince them that the US is winning, or has the early prospect of winning. He failed. They don't buy it.

The great publicity blitz and attempt to re-cast the Iraq problem as a resolvable one has fallen flat on its face.

Sunni, Secular Groups Demand New Vote; Claim Election Rigged (WashPost) Sunni and secular political groups angrily claimed Tuesday that last week's Iraqi national election was rigged, demanded a new vote and threatened to leave a shambles the delicate plan to bring the country's wary factions together in a new government.

Civil war in Iraq? Who

Civil war in Iraq? Who would have thought? Wonder if Bush Jr. will be visited by Ghost of Gulf War Past (who looks a lot like his daddy) who will tell Georgie that invading Iraq is a no win situation?

Even Bush's guys

in Iraq aren't happy with the voting.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Dozens of Sunni Arab and secular Shiite groups threatened Thursday to boycott Iraq’s new legislature if complaints about tainted voting are not reviewed by an international body.

A representative for former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi described the Dec. 15 vote as “fraudulent” and the elected lawmakers “illegitimate.”

A joint statement issued by 35 political groups that competed in last week’s elections said the Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq, which oversaw the ballot, should be disbanded.

Allawi representative Ibrahim al-Janabi took the accusations one step forward and described the Dec. 15 elections in all of Iraq’s 18 provinces as “fraudulent.”

“These elections are fraudulent, they are fraudulent, and the next parliament is illegitimate. We reject all this process,” al-Janabi told a news conference.

I wonder what this news will do for Bush's poll numers? Funny I am not hearing about it on cable news!

Did the Iraqis figure this

Did the Iraqis figure this out themselves or did the visit from the Grip Reaper (Cheney) make them see the light? Cheney's finger isn't purple but it doesn't mean he didn't drop a few ballots boxes off.

I am afraid

We never were meant to win this war. It is a propoganda ploy to keep Repugs in power. I mean the only way to win this war is catch Osama. Since he had a business relationship with the Bushes, this will never happen. I believe he was hired to pull this off. The neo-cons got their "Pearl Harbor" event to get everyone behind their facist agenda, and Osama, the Taliban, and everyone but Saddam, and the almost 2200 younsters that have died get away. Some victory.
