JOE OTTERBEIN JR LAUNCHES UNUSUAL BID FOR US HOUSE
Shrewsbury Democrat Calls for More Democrats to Compete for Nomination

(York, Pennsylvania) Today Shrewsbury resident Joe Otterbein announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination to challenge Representative Todd Platts. Instead of hoping to keep other candidates out of what many consider a long-shot attempt to defeat the three term incumbent, Otterbein is asking other Democrats to challenge him.

Otterbein told supporters at the York County Judicial Center that, “Politics should be about people getting together and solving problems. As competitors we can work together to find solutions to the real problems in our communities. Rather than bluster and preaching to the choir, we Democrats need to get off our stumps and into our communities to work side by side with our neighbors. We need to earn their trust with our sweat.”

For nearly 50 years, Joe Otterbein Jr. has worked in his family’s bakery, as a caterer for hospitals and hotels, and most recently as the food services director of a large meals-on-wheels program. "After high school I went to work at my dad and granddad's bakery. I didn't have the chance to go to college. I learned that if something needs to get done, you do it. Arguing and finger-pointing just meant that the bread didn't get made and our customers went somewhere else, and that wasn't an option."

Otterbein is supported in his efforts by a Philadelphia-based political action committee, GoodWorks-PAC.org, founded by Eric Loeb. “GoodWorks-PAC.org helps competing Democratic candidates work together on public service events,” said Loeb. “Public service is important for campaigns because it brings politics back to fundamentals. Politics started when people worked together to address their community needs. Now our national politics are about consultants and ads and who-you-know, not what you can do. If more politicians put their muscle where there mouth is, maybe the voters would not be so cynical and we’d elect better people.”

“Politicians should stop worrying about their next ad campaign and instead just roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty. As a voter you can learn a lot more about a person when you have to rely on them to help you hang a sheet of dry-wall or prep a picket fence for painting than you can from any 30 second ad,” said Otterbein “Competition forces candidates to work harder and produce results, and that’s good for everybody. The best person for the job will be clear enough when we are knee deep in muck cleaning a river or side by side packing cookies for our troops. By bringing Democratic voters and candidates together we can again make politics what it should be – people working together to solve problems.”

Otterbein is married to Stacey Otterbein, and has four children, Angela, Holly, Joey, and Kimberley.

Loeb created an online Presidential campaign for Clinton/Gore in 1992 while a doctoral student at MIT. He has since advised numerous campaigns, including serving as the chief software engineer for Al Gore's presidential campaign in 2000, and as chief Internet architect for the Democratic National Committee.

OK, prove it.

I went to your candidates website and it sounds "American" enough in a vanilla, flag waving sorta way, but what is your candidate's position on the issues facing us today? I don't care if he can hang a sheet of drywall for a photo-op, I want to know what he believes in and whether he has the character to maintain those beliefs when elected.

We have enough Democrats in office now that won't stand up for us. Have your guy go out on a limb and give us some specifics.

I'm completely confident that he'll be happy to

Thank you, Golfmonkey. I'll send him the link to this thread.

Until he gets here (and while he's here) would you like to pose any specific questions?

GoodWorks-PAC.org: Let Our Actions Speak to the Voters!

Let's see...

Let's start with his position on the Iraq war, equal rights for all, freedom of religion including freedom from religion, reproductive rights, personal privacy, universal healthcare, social security, jobs, the environment.

You know, basic stuff.

BTW, running as a Dem in PA-19 is going to be an uphill climb for sure.

A real Democrat!

Thanks for the opportunity golfmonkey!

Our troops have done a great job in the IRAQ WAR. They checked and made sure there were no weapons of mass destruction, captured Hussein and made sure the new nation has basic freedoms. Now we can plan to bring the troops home. Here’s the plan: starting tomorrow (8/24/05), put our brave men and women on trucks, take them to the airport and fly them back to their families, who need them far more than Iraq does right now. Any nation’s internal security should always be the responsibility of that nation. Not ours.

It’s a national calamity that you even have to ask about EQUAL RIGHTS in 2005. I’m old enough to remember back in the late 60’s when , as a pre-teen, I had my front tooth knocked out by a white guy who objected to me for taking up for a “ni...r” because I dared to try and stop him and his older, and much larger, gang of thugs from beating up my friend. Just a few years ago I had my other front tooth removed and the dentist said that it was from damage done from the 60’s. I lost my two upper front teeth. I’m prepared to lose the bottom four to protect minorities, blacks, gays and yes, even stupid white men. Also we must make the Voter’s Rights bill permanent. It should be done as of yesterday.

FREEDOM of RELIGION is freedom FROM religion. Whoever is such a moral coward to think otherwise…well I’ll be nice and just say that person is no Thomas Jefferson.

REPROTUCTIVE RIGHTS and personal rights have plenty in common. Personally I know that abortion is morally wrong, but it is not MY right to lock up women who have to make such a difficult decision. I liken a woman having an abortion to the guy who recently, when trapped rock climbing alone in the wilderness, had to cut off his arm to save his life. I hope I never have to do something like that. Another problem is that, if we made it illegal, how would the “crime” be discovered? By searching a doctor’s office? We need to keep the government out of our bedrooms and our doctor’s examining rooms. This includes drug testing and locking up women for harming their fetuses with drug-abuse. Punishing sick drug-abusers is morally wrong.

We need to make HEALTHCARE more affordable. A good way to do this is to give employers 105% tax deductions for paying for healthcare for their employees. Any smart businessman would be glad to pocket the extra 5%. It would make healthcare cheaper for all of us because we already pay for those who can’t afford to go to the doctor and wind up costing us more in the hospital emergency room. I don’t think anyone disagrees that healthcare is a universal human right. That is why hospitals (I used to work in one) take in the poor and uninsured to begin with.

Politicians need to keep their greedy hands off our SOCIAL SECURITY money. The program is great as it is. The problem comes from busting open the Social Security Trust Fund. Taking that money is a crime that hurts the men and women of the Greatest Generation. These elderly vets paid for our freedom with their lives and limbs. The GOP is wrong for trying to take our vets, and their widow’s hard-earned money.

Employers should be given tax breaks for every new JOB they create. I understand the problem well, just last week I was laid-off from my job of twelve years as Food Service Director with Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland, largely because of gas price increases.

I belong to the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) and I’m certified with them as a Certified Food Safety Professional (CFSP.) I understand that the ENVIRONMENT means more than just protecting beautiful scenery. After all, we eat, drink and breathe our environment everyday. And that does not even include the fact that we need to protect our environment so it can continue to be the most valuable resource for our jobs and businesses we have. We need to protect for our future business people.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks again,

Joe Otterbein
Democratic Candidate for Congress, PA-19

Doh!

Heh. To be totally honest, I didn't really expect a response from all of those very tongue-in-cheek questions I posed, let alone a response from the candidate directly. I'm equally surprised at the candidness of them.

Your plan for corporate tax credits for hiring and providing healthcare is a fantastic idea, and I hope others follow your lead.

As you can see from my profile, I live in Ohio so I won't be able to cast a vote for you, but I can promise you that I will do a little arm twisting of a family member of mine that lives in York which I believe is your district.

Good luck to you.

Thanks Golfmonkey!

I know your Ohio vote can't help me. But I'll be working for people like you in PA-19, PA and all accross America!

Yes, York is in my district. And in fact I live in York.

Another from PA

Hey at least this guy lives, works and is a REAL PENNSYLVANIAN! Its a lot better than that skunk in a sheet Santourum. He lives in Virginia, his sister lives in a house in PA and he uses the address. Also the kind people of PA got duped into paying for his kids college. He writes some trashy book about women who should stay at home because to work is greed. Now this guy is really out on the extreme. I have 2 bumper stickers on my car that say "Deafeat Santourum" Maybe we should have Pat Robertson give a speech about him! It is my sincere hope that Bob Casey wipes the floor with THIS CLOWN in the next election!

Bumper Stickers

I don't understand why Santourum would want to live in Virgina when PA is the best state in the union.

Would you like to put a Otterbein for Congress next to those Defeat Santourum ones?

Joe Otterbein
