"Mehlman's Get out of Jail Free Card"

A Buzzflash News Alert:

Washington, DC - Only days after RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman claimed that his party has a "zero-tolerance" policy against voter fraud, intimidation, and suppression, it has been reported that the Republican Party has spent more than $722,000 to defend a former Bush election official accused of conspiring to keep Democrats from voting. [Boston Globe, 8/11/05; Letter to the American Center for Voting Rights Legislative Fund from RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman, 8/9/05]

Meanwhile, Mehlman has sent out an RNC fundraising email  warning of Democratic schemes to steal votes in upcoming elections! Unholy hypocrisy Batman! You just can't make this stuff up...well, the Republicans sure can...

Thanks, Ted. Reading Mehlman letter was more reinforcement of the extreme hyprocritical traits of the GOP. Mehlman letter: http://www.gop.com/News/Read.aspx?ID=5712

Dear Mr. Lunde and Mr. Hearne:

Thank you for sending me a copy of your report “Vote Fraud, Intimidation & Suppression In The 2004 Presidential Election.” I received and examined the report last week, and I agree with you that it is vitally important that our election system be free from fraud and intimidation. When the American people walk into voting booths, they deserve to be confident in the integrity of the system.

As your report documents, this is unfortunately not always the case. And while I believe that the instances of fraud you have revealed are the exception, not the rule, that does not mean that we should accept them – and we will not.

I strongly support your proposal of a zero-tolerance policy toward election fraud and intimidation, and I would encourage Chairman Dean and the Democrat Party to do the same. The position of the Republican National Committee is simple: we will not tolerate fraud; we will not tolerate intimidation; we will not tolerate suppression. No employee, associate, or any person representing the Republican Party who engages in these kinds of acts will remain in that position. Republicans do not need to resort to fraud and intimidation to win, and no Republican who does deserves victory.

Last week marked the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act. That landmark legislation made a statement of principle: the right to vote belongs to all of us, and no one has the right to take it away or dilute it by intimidation, fraud or suppression. The Republican Party will not rest until this principle is upheld.

Sincerely,

Ken Mehlman
Chairman, Republican National Committee
