Senate to Review Roberts' Job Application
Tell Them to Demand His Complete Resume!
The press is beginning to uncover how Supreme Court nominee John Roberts began his career: as one of the right-wing activists and political operatives Reagan brought to Washington who set
out to reverse a generation of civil rights protections.
The fraction of Roberts' record that the White House is currently permitting the Senate to see--which is complete only for the first two years of the decade Roberts worked for Reagan and the
first President Bush--show that he did more than execute the orders of others. Roberts frequently tried to push policy to the right and advocated positions too radical for even Reagan's cadre of activists.
Demand the Senate stand up to the White House's attempt to hide Roberts' record! There has been a sea-change in the press in recent days. The honeymoon Roberts enjoyed in the week following his nomination is ending. A flurry of articles from such newspapers as the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Chicago Tribune is moving the media beyond Roberts' life story and squarely onto his record.
These reports are reminding the American public of what PFAW activists and their allies have been saying since day one: Judge Roberts is not a competitor in a personality contest, he is an applicant for one of the nation's most powerful jobs. Thanks to your efforts, many senators are getting the message that they must do what all employers reviewing a job applicant must do--examine Roberts' entire resume and check his references.
Thanks in large measure to the work of you and other activists who began sending 80,000 messages to the Senate minutes after President Bush announced Roberts' nomination, no Democratic senator has endorsed Roberts--all are calling for a thorough review of his record and judicial philosophy. And, unlike with Clarence Thomas' nomination, the Democrats are refusing to provide a guarantee that they will not filibuster the Roberts nomination.
The activities of the over 20 state Coalitions for a Fair and Independent Judiciary have kept the pressure on over the past week. We must once again make it clear that Americans will not tolerate the Senate allowing the Bush administration to force its nominee through without a thorough review of his troubling record.
Unless you act, the Senate may allow the Bush administration to steamroll it once again. Don't let that happen! If you are not one of the thousands who have already signed the petition demanding that the Senate stand up to the White House, do so now. They need to know the public is behind them.
