EPA Abandons Rule on Lead Poisoning from Home Renovations
From the Committee on Government Reform Minority Office:
Monday, May 09, 2005 -- Rep. Waxman, Sens. Boxer and Obama, and Reps. Towns and Lynch protest EPA's abandonment of regulations required by law to protect children from exposure to lead in renovated homes.
The Toxic Substances Control Act requires EPA to set national standards for lead-safe renovation and remodeling practices. These regulations would protect children, their families, and construction workers from one of the largest sources of exposure to lead. Although EPA has avoided making a formal announcement of its decision, the agency has apparently decided to forego issuing these regulations. Instead, EPA plans to ask the construction industry involved in home renovation and remodeling to voluntarily implement protective practices. EPA’s actions do not comply with the law, and they utterly fail to protect our children from a toxic substance that can cause severe developmental damage.

This is irresponsible and incomprehensible.
How can they turn their backs on the health of our children and their families?
Kudos to the Senators who are fighting this. Let's get Erin Brockavitch on this.
How nice
Now the EPA is going to let poisons coexist with children in their homes. The kids won't have to have nightmares about the boogey man. Instead, the paint on the wall will do the trick. What happened to "Home Sweet Home"? The more these guys talk about morality and the Christian way, the more the evil comes out of their pores. What good are any of us anyway if we can't protect the poor, the innocent, and the children? We spend days worrying about Terri Schiavo who has no cortical function while feeding a child lead spread on a cracker. Remember they eat the lead paint because it is sweet. When Bush next cuts foodstamps so that that the children will be empowered to take control of their diets, the kids nay have nothing else left to eat. If this is what we have become,we should be ashamed. I fear what hidden horrors might surface tomorrow. We don't need terrorists to destroy us, we have the Republican Party.
