HALLIBURTON and ASBESTOS

Associated Press
Feb. 3rd, 2005

SEATTLE - More than 100 Northwest families have won a $30 million settlement in an asbestos lawsuit involving a subsidiary of Houston-based Halliburton Co.

The deal was part of a $4.3 billion global settlement encompassing Halliburton's past, present and future asbestos liabilities, Matthew Bergman, a lawyer who represented the families, said Thursday. [...]

Dresser Industries, a subsidiary of Halliburton acquired when Vice President Dick Cheney was chairman of the company, distributed asbestos products to shipyards, power plants and industrial facilities.

Plaintiffs alleged Dresser officials knew their products were harmful to workers in the 1930s but continued to distribute them through the mid-1970s.

To make our economy stronger and more competitive, America must reward, not punish, the efforts and dreams of entrepreneurs.  [...]  Justice is distorted, and our economy is held back, by irresponsible class actions and frivolous asbestos claims - and I urge Congress to pass legal reforms this year.

Is this why Bush wants to stop litigation?

I know that George Bush will never know the pain of mesothelioma or black lung. I thought that he was opposed to litigation to help the medical community. Ha Ha! Once again, it is really about corporate greed and trying to make money the fastest way possible on the backs of the working class. How nice. We need informmercials to get the word out. 60% of the people believe that Social Security is in crisis because that is what they hear on the news and radio over and over again. The majority of people don't listen to NPR or even CNN with Paul Krugman. We need a spokesperson who has the "appeal" of Rush (not appealing to me but to many) whose voice will be heard. Many people believe what they hear because that is all that they hear. Isn't there anybody out there to get the word out?

Those are the same 60% that believe that Saddam was behind 9/11, and had WMD. Government-sponsored propaganda is very effective, especially in America, because we can not believe that our "elected representatives" would lie to us.

In fact, there is an old joke that says the American way is to lie, cheat, and steal. Unfortunately, it is no longer a joke.

I don't know if Feinstein's the one

given her endorsement of Condi Rice,
but her candid rejection of a "crisis"
got my attention.
(Found this when I was researching our state constitution)

60% of the people believe that Social Security is in crisis because 60% of the people still think they can trust what comes out of Bush's mouth. (why is that?)

>Lets see thats 30,000,000 dived by 100, 100 into 300 carry the zeros, that adds up to $300,000.00 each, after 20 years of litigation and untold horror stories of cancer and pain.

It's worse than you think. To

It's worse than you think. Tort reform is a strategic initiative. A strategic initiative is something that affects politics in more than just the most obvious way. Of course, W wants to protect companies like Halliburton from lawsuits, but it is much much more. Lawyers contribute money to the democratic party, taking away their source of income takes away money they can contribute to democrats. There are probably other affects of tort reform that I can't think of right now. But you can bet that anything W mentioned in his SOTU has more than just one obvious affect, this administration is quite clever with the strategic initiatives.

Tort reform is just another i

Tort reform is just another issue grossly exaggerated by the BA. Corporations aren't losing as much money to lawsuits as we're being led to believe, but the threat of a lawsuit does keep them inline. Capping damages will allow corporations to do what insurance companies do; write their losses off as the cost of doing business and adjust their product price accordingly, giving them license to be bad citizens.

The majority of lawsuits in this country are brought about not in the name of the consumer, but by corporations. Lawyers will always make money, and hopefully they will continue to support us.

If we didn't need the money,

If we didn't need the money, I would agree with Willie Shakespeare: "The first thing we do is kill all the..."

BA=BS

I gotta share something. Tonight I read "the BA" a couple times -- the first time I read it I thought -- hmm, must be short for "the Big Ass" -- now, of course I realize it's short for "the Bush Administration" -- how disappointing. :-D

how disgusting...

I knew Bush was covering Corporate butt, but I didn't know it was that specific butt -- haliburton -- I'm disgusted.

Scalia

Lets see if Scalia follows Rehnquist. Interested whether hell lynch his colleagues.

Just another PR campaign...

However; the most prominent and wealthy legal minds; are the PI/Tort lawyers; highest paid attorneys (Tort law); and I agree this would be 'a target group'...moreover; its because 'large business' is getting taken to the cleaners --and Bush feels this is 'unfair'..unfair to 'his supporters' corporations; given there's no 'caps' on jury verdicts.

---Although; tort law isn't based on 'caps' and 'amounts of money'...its based 'negligence, punitive damages, liability, fault, fraud and many other factors; --if and when the tort reform takes place --'impartial jury's' will render a 'verdict' on the facts and not on an award 'cap'. (listen to Bush's argument; he never mentions 'words like negligence, liability et al).

--If reforms takes --Supreme Court has to be 'impartial' --for both sides. ----This 'PR campaign' is just like 'Social Security'...as long as a 'proposal' is making waves and keeping the media going is all Bush wants ---he knows the campaign issues he proposes require approval of 'committee's, courts, and congress and others.

Bush and Co --love 'PR campaigns'..how many campaigns for the 'good for people; has he started in the last year = 0. (zero my friend)....instead 'against the people'.

I believe the 51% of Bush supporters (smart ones) realize that sometimes this man doesn't make sense --although they are hanging on to the 'republican symbol and loyality' of the party...they can wait for the right replacement --but they want to keep this going; no matter at what price!

Bush the pinhead has no interest in making 'good on his deeds' rather 'lies' than he has for the 'God he claims'. Mostly; he's overrated and overstocked ; he needs to go away --but he won't because his 'arrogrant and big ideas'..keep the 'media popping' with his 'stupidity'.

All the planning Rove, Bush, Cheney do on a daily basis are 'rituals of 'greed and how to payback their lobbyists, corp money and keeping the Repugs in power'...no more than that.

"impluse decisions and misjudgments, may lead you down the wrong path"!

It's always a political

It's always a political issue, isn't it? There's always somebody interested in taking advatages from a public issue. Asbestos is well known matter and sides are almost perefectly balanced. I just don't want to hear about politics into this, it's a social matter hard to solve. Where were politicians when these people got mesothelioma at work in last years. Who stopped it? Nobody... That's why we are readdig about mesothelioma law suits today.

I thought I got the gist of

I thought I got the gist of what you were saying but then you wrote:

"Where were politicians when these people got mesothelioma at work in last years."

Are you not therefore asking for political involvement?
