Threat for arrest for bumper sticker 'Fuck Bush'

This is over the top. There must be a Brain-washing Coup for Cops going on somewhere. We ain't in America any more. DENVER -- Some people are angry when they see Shasta Bates' derogatory bumper sticker about President George W. Bush -- but she didn't think she'd be threatened with arrest because of it.(more below)

The Denver Police Department is investigating a sergeant who allegedly threatened to arrest the 26-year-old for displaying the bumper sticker.

Bates said she was told by the sergeant Tuesday that her bumper sticker was illegal because it was profane. She said he told her he'd arrest her if she didn't remove it.

But City Attorney Cole Finegan said he doesn't believe there's any city ordinance against displaying a profane bumper sticker.

Colorado ACLU Legal Director Mark Silverstein said the alleged threat of arrest clearly violates First Amendment protection.

Bumper Sticker said Fuck Bush

Cop pays sticker price He'll be punished for arrest threat over anti-Bush label By Brian D. Crecente, Rocky Mountain News January 26, 2005 Denver police Sgt. Michael Karasek will be disciplined for threatening to arrest a woman for displaying on her truck a profane bumper sticker about President Bush, Police Chief Gerry Whitman said Tuesday. An internal affairs investigation took just a day to complete, and the allegation against the officer was upheld, Whitman said. Advertisement He declined to say what the discipline would be but said that all the department's officers will receive "training about the topic." About 11 a.m. Monday, Shasta Bates, 26, was confronted by a man while standing in a UPS store. The man told her he was upset by her bumper sticker, which read "F--- Bush." The man then went outside and flagged down Karasek, who was working off-duty in uniform at the shopping center, in the 800 block of South Monaco Parkway. After reading the sticker and talking to the man, Karasek went into the store to confront Bates. Bates, three UPS employees and a Rocky Mountain News reporter who happened to be there all say that the officer threatened to arrest the woman if she didn't remove the bumper sticker from her truck. Bates filed a complaint against the officer with the department. Karasek told investigators that he did threaten the woman with arrest, but at the time he thought he was following the law, a police source said. He realized shortly after the confrontation that he was wrong, the source said. The Rocky Mountain News story spurred powerful and mixed reactions. Several directed the obscenity at Karasek or Bates, while others were more philosophical. Bates was surprised at the attention the incident drew. She added that she understood the officer made a mistake. "Everybody makes mistakes," she said, "but you have to get punished for them."http://dailykos.com/story/2005/1/26/43519/2255

Yeesh

I'm glad that the officer who threatened her got punished, but it's sad that he would even do such a thing. I just hope that this event keeps others from following his example.

Oh come on...

Do you really really think that it is all right for people to display a bumper sticker with the F-word? Shouldn't people be able to drive their children around without a blindfold? Or should I have to be prepared to answer at any moment when my 6-year-old son asks "what's fuck"?

Maybe you don't want to expla

Maybe you don't want to explain the f-word in general but in the context of Bush it's certainly not sexual. You can simply explain it's about the pResident.

If that is protected speech,

If that is protected "speech", then it ought to be protected "speech" to cover it up with a bumper sticker that says "expletive deleted" or something like that.

Did Cheney worry about that?

I think not.

They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

Didn't he ask about it

when Cheney said it on the Senate floor?

Look, I've seen lots of bumperstickers with bad words on them. They're not targeted. This sticker wasn't targeted because it had a bad word on it, it was targeted because it wasn't supportive of Bush.

btw, if your child is of school age you've waited too long to explain things to him.

They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

Not to excuse him, but I beli

Not to excuse him, but I believe Cheny said to in private conversation to Leahy (?) not during a speech in the Senate. It was on the Senate floor only to the extent the Senator and Cheney were in the Senate when the exchange took place.

It is not moral

for the vice president of the United States to use profanity on the senate floor. I don't care if it was a private conversation or not. Even if it hadn't made the news, he still did it, and it was wrong.

They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

AS I said, I was not intendin

AS I said, I was not intending to excuse him, but saying it happened "on the Senate floor" implies it was public and during as in a Senate speech.

It doesn't matter if it was 'public'

it was on the Senate floor, and it was uncalled for.

They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

The Senate floor is as public

The Senate floor is as public as it gets. Cheney compounded his statement by defending it later, and saying that "it made him feel better" for having said it. It was his "right" to say it, just as it is the woman's "right" to display the bumper sticker.

For the guy with the kids, I would rather my kids see the "F" word, than daily TV reports of American troops being killed in a senseless war against the wrong fucking enemy.

Fxxx

I think sexual intercourse involves beings. Certain human males have the aim to send in a sperm cell so it unifies with a female cell not using condoms. The result is an unified cell. Thats the new child.

Now, if it concerns Bush

See, reasoning by my last post this is a very nasty statement because George W. Bush is not female and the males have the more active part in the process (getting the sperm cell in). Thus one could assume that George W. Bush is being regarded as a hole by this bumper sticker.

Castrate Bush?

Good bumper sticker and a way to clean up the gene pool.

Castrate Bush -

To castrate implies to remove testicles.

Bush has none.

Unless your kid lives in a vacuum, he's probably heard the "F" word. How Do YOU Explain to your kid the president lied about the reasons to START a war? How do you explain that the president doesn't care about clean air and clean water? How do you explain the president doesn't care about healthcare for the poor? or that jobs going overseas is GOOD? or that stealing an election(maybe two) is ok? or that the president thinks rich people pay too much taxes, and poor people not enough? And most importantly, how do you explain that YOU get to decide what people can put on their cars, and what words you find objectionable? I would not use that bumper sticker on MY car, but that is MY decision, not yours. All you have to say to your kid is that person does NOT like Mr. Bush.

it was a good thing that it happened this way

I'm just glad she had witnesses and this didn't happen out on a deserted highway somewhere. It would be a whole different story. If it ever made it to _being_ a story in the first place.

NOW

... a bumper sticker i'd like to see.

At times like this....

I am glad I killed the television years ago.

I can honestly say that I have NEVER seen Cheney say the f-word.

Funny...

I didn't see that bumpersticker. See how that works?

They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

I think I will....

make some "expletive deleted" bumper stickers. There are some non-political bumper stickers I'd like to see covered as well.

Defacing someone else's personal property

is not a good idea. Just grow up and accept the fact that this is America, and in America the vice president has set the precedent when it comes to profanity.

Tell your little kid that and get on with it.

I'm with you at that. The GO

I'm with you at that. The GOP should have no problem accepting that as they're always saying Clinton's Lewinsky affair causes teens to have sex!

Funny...

Teenagers had sex before Clinton was president. I really don't think that, when they're in the backseat pawing at each other they're thinking about the POTUS.

That was my point! The GOP c

That was my point! The GOP claim Clinton is the cause, a ridiculous argument they've made since 1998.

Just been to rawstory.com

Buck Fush

I have that one.

Question is: where the dear lady got the original one? I'd buy at least couple of them. ;)

How crass do we want to become in front of kids? I’d rather keep the worst off our vehicles even as why battle these monsters. How bout this instead as a bumper sticker:

BUSH WORSHIPS SATIN!

Where Cheney said the f word

I think Cheney and Leahy were walking out of the Senate and in the lobby, but Cheney said it loud enough to be heard by others. Here is a better bumper sticker without the f word - "Bush + Dick = Screwed."

Great one!

You are delusional

Unfortunately, we are not the people crying foul. Listen to the spewing of Rush and O Reilly... They make stuff up just to justify their existance. Hate and egregious lies are not part of the progressive movement. GW will go down as the criminal that moved our country backwards fifty years.
