480 Lincoln Dr. (Math Bldg.)
"Take Back America – Impeachment is Imperative NOW" town meeting will
take place Monday evening July 28th in Madison. It starts at 7 PM in
the auditorium (Rm. B130) in Van Vleck Hall on Bascom Hill on the UW
Madison campus with coffee and treats at 6:15 PM.
Directions: Park in Helen C. White Library parking ramp, Park St.,
near the Memorial Union, walk up hill to Bascom Hall & Van Vleck is to
the left - a tall slender building.
Meeting organizer Buzz Davis, Veterans for Peace member, explained,
"We have two excellent thinkers on national politics and impeachment.
Dr. Robert Bowman, Ph.D. in aeronautics, Lt Col, US Air Force retired
and John Nichols, author and columnist. Co-organizer and UW-Madison
Professor Joe Elder will serve as moderator. These experts will speak
and then the meeting is open for discussion."
The Madison meeting is part of Dr. Bowman's national speaking tour
advocating impeachment and change. Bowman stated, "We must take back
America from the corporate interests. Our immediate goals are to
prevent a war on Iran, end the occupation of Iraq, and start
impeachment proceedings against President Bush and Vice President
Cheney."
Nichols is a national expert and author on impeachment and associate
editor of the Capital Times. He said, "Congress has failed to hold
the president accountable. I will discuss where we are at and where
we should go on accountability."
Bowman, a Vietnam veteran, was Director of Advanced Space Programs
Development during the Carter presidency. President Reagan took this
program and turned it into his offensive "Star Wars" program. Bowman
then retired from the military and became an early and open critic of
Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI). On the McNeil-Lehrer
News Hour he called SDI "...the ultimate military lunacy, easily
overwhelmed and vulnerable."
Davis explained the playing field for impeachment is changing rapidly.
He believes in past years the issue of impeachment has been blocked
by the media or when mentioned immediately dismissed. "But the public
has always been far in front of the politicians in Congress. In July
of last year, according to an American Research Group (ARG) poll 45%
of all adults believed Mr. Bush should be impeached and 54% of all
adults believe Mr. Cheney should be impeached. By late October 2007 a
Vermont TV station WCAX conducted its statewide poll of likely voters
that revealed 61% in favor of impeaching Bush and 64% in favor of
impeaching Cheney."
Rep. Baldwin wrote in her 7-18-08 newsletter "On July 25th, the House
Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on the Imperial Presidency of
George W. Bush and possible legal responses...Over the last seven plus
years, there have been numerous credible allegations of serious
misconduct by officials in the Bush Administration. At the same time,
the administration has adopted what many would describe as a radical
view of its own powers and authorities. I strongly support Chairman
John Conyers' decision to examine a range of legal and legislative
responses to allegations of administration misconduct and their
expansion of executive branch power."
Davis stated, "So by our town meeting Monday impeachment may be moving
forward on the Congressional agenda. We invite all to come, think and
discuss with us July 28th 7 PM."
