The suicide bomb attack also killed at least 22 others, doctors said. It was not immediately clear if Bhutto died from shots fired before the blast, or from wounds caused by bomb shrapnel.

Her body was removed from Rawalpindi General Hospital late Thursday night, about six hours after the assassination.

President Pervez Musharraf held an emergency meeting in the hours after the death, according to state media.

He said the killers were the same extremists that Pakistan is fighting a war against, and announced three days of national mourning.

Video of the scene just moments before the explosion showed Bhutto stepping into a heavily guarded vehicle to leave the rally.

John Moore, a photographer for Getty Images, said he heard at least two gunshots before the bomb was detonated.

Police sources told CNN the bomber, who was riding a motorcycle, blew himself up near Bhutto's vehicle. Video Watch aftermath of the attack. »

Bhutto was rushed to Rawalpindi General Hospital -- less than two miles from the bombing scene -- where doctors pronounced her dead.

Chaos erupted at the hospital when former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived to pay his respects to Bhutto less than three hours after her death.

Wahoo, this is a horrible tragedy

and loss for Pakistan.

An incredibly strong and brave women,
she WAS their great hope.

My thoughts and prayers are with her family, supporters
and the people of Pakistan.

This is very scary, happening in one of the most unstable areas of
our world where they possess nuclear weapons.

She was assassinated- this was no "accident".

Thanks for posting this.

This just breaking...

Bhutto's 19 year old son has taken over the leadership of her supporters.

The greatest derangement of the mind is to believe in something because one wishes it to be so.

I just read that, Grinch.

He and his father will take over her position,
per instructions in her will.

From the grave

Has anyone realized the power trip in directing family from the grave here? The son is to finish college, then take over the party leadership and the husband is to run the party with Bhutto's backers, until the son finishes college. I guess that is how a family dynasty is built, but after being imprisoned and tortured I would guess that the husband is not too anxious to expose himself to that kind of politics again.

I guess that is how things are done in the ME. I can't imagine leaving instructions for how my family should live their lives after I have made my final departure, ...but it sounds ...naw ;)

Di, I don't believe that

Di, I don't believe that this directive "from the grave" is much different than the Old Money dynasties here in the US. It's all about money and power, and the Bhutto family is certainly Old ME Money (and power).

Having said that, the ME cultural mentality allows for succession of personal power, and in most cases is expected as an obligation of the heirs.

Bhutto was to deliver information on vote rigging

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - On the day she was killed, opposition leader Benazir Bhutto planned to give two U.S. legislators a dossier accusing the Pakistani government and intelligence service of rigging upcoming elections, an aide said Tuesday.
