Losing Hope
I've always been a fairly optimistic person, but I have been feeling profoundly depressed about the Democratic Congress and the media-chosen front-runners of the '08 Presidential Campaign.
I am really feeling as if nothing I say or do makes any difference whatsoever. Protests aren't covered by the "news", my Senators don't care what my opinion on the issues are, Reid and Pelosi are corrupt hacks in my view and care more about their status than that of this country. Co-workers and friends are uninvolved in what is happening and could not even care less about it. John Conyers has lost his fire for impeachment and ending the war in Iraq. Democrats are selling out to the telecoms and the war profiteers, they cave on FISA and condemn MoveOn.org for using their right of freedom of speech to question General Petraeus. I'm baffled by their spinelessness when the majority of Americans feel this country is on the wrong track.
I feel like I've been lied to and manipulated by the only party that could possibly help us get our country back on track. I know that not voting and becomming apathetic is not the answer, but what do you do when you feel that your voice means nothing? How long do you try to talk to a brick wall before you have to give up?
I've repeatedly written to Nancy Pelosi and have NEVER received a response. I am not a constituent, but as Speaker doesn't she have a responsibility to me too? Where the hell is MY REPRESENTATION?
The absolutely only thing that has kept me going this far is that my representative is Keith Ellison and he reflects my values. That's it. He's the only one.
Please, somebody, give me a reason to keep being involved because I can't think of one other than "it's better than the alternative". That's just not cutting it anymore.
Thanks,

AmericanScream, It doesn't surprise me that you...
never heard from Nancy Pelosi. According to Bernie Ward, talkshow host on KGO San Francisco last night mentioned that Nancy has not talked to her donstituents in the Bay Area for over 20 months now. Eventually, she has to run again and will have to face them.
As things stand now, Nancy could well lose her place to Cindy Sheehan who is running as an independent.

I live in Minneapolis, but I will do whatever I can to help Cindy beat nancy. I'm fed up with these career criminals who think they don't have to answer to us. Did you happen to see the YouTube video of Code Pink trying to talk to Rockefeller IV? They are on the FBI Watch List (for peaceful demonstrations) and can't get an answer as to how to get off it. He refused to even look at them! This is just arrogant criminality. I want my country back.
Okay America, let's get rough!
Is ten dollars worth of stamps in your budget. Anybody?
Well I do. I say every tuesday mail the letters with nothing but IMPEACH, IMPEACH IMPEACH IMPEACH IMPEACH ALL THE WAY DOWN FOR THE FULL LETTER IN CAPS AND WITH EXCLAIMATION POINTS IN RED IN WHITE AND IN BLUE
Everyday if we have to until they all get the message. I'm buying my stamps, gonna write a letter and make over 100 copies. I'll buy stamps whenever I run out, but there not gonna get away with it. I'll fill every post office from here to DC to let them know how i feel. Then we need to boycott some of these corporations that put these people in . I'm even feeling kinda Omish, and may just boycott evferything I can't make my self. Break the corporations and the government lobbyist.
They don't listen to us maybe they will listen to their bankers when they don't have any customers for Halloween, Turkey day, what have we got to be Thankful for?

ps Don't forget to mail those impeach now letters. fill up the post offices with letters 100 at a time.
I Agree With You
I feel the exact same way. I don't buy anything I don't absolutely need, and then if I do I buy it from a "blue" source that gives back to the environment or the workers, or a small business in my neighborhood. When I get solicitations from the Democrats I write back that they will not get any more of my money until impeachment is "back on the table". I give my money to Amnesty International and the ACLU. I also have been giving money to Al Franken's campaign because I believe he is a true populist.
I tried the impeachment letters from the do-it-yourself-impeachment site. I must have done that 5 times. I lost hope on that one. But I am thinking of sticking "inserts" in my mailings back to the Democrats saying they are not getting my money until they represent my views (and the views they promised to represent). My inserts would be printouts of blog entries showing the massive discontent, news stories about criminality not being addressed, etc. I'm tired of giving money to people who are not representing me, or the 71% of Americans who are sick and tired of the "status quo" and quid pro quo.
You are 100% correct. The corporations are what is killing this country and our politicians are beholden to them and have forgotten about us.

I certainly share many of
I certainly share many of your feelings, as I'm sure many other do also. I wish I had succinct, meaningful reason to give you but I don't have the words.(Perhaps someone else on this site has?) Sometimes I will just step away from it for a brief time. Then I "check back in" and get involved again. Mentally, that helps me.
But it often feels like we're banging our heads against a brick wall. And right now, it seems that brick wall is our current Congress. Like many people, I had great hopes after the 2006 election. But except for the fact I got a new Democratic Senator who does share my views, there has not been much to celebrate.
I have written to Pelosi and others but I don't except a response from them. It's enough for me that someone sees my thoughts.
Silence is not golden in this case. We simply have to keep speaking out.
I would ask you please don't give up. You are not alone and you are needed. What you do helps. Hope can be renewed. It can be found even in hidden places.
who's in charge here?
Once upon a time there was a Democratic Republic called the United States of America. Through great trials, tribulations and perseverance they became the world model for freedom and progress. Television was invented and Americans increasingly sought information about the world from this new medium. In the course of a few decades Television replaced reading and education as the primary source of knowledge. Several large corporations were able to take control of this medium. They began to control the masses by manipulating their emotions. Hence began the New World Order. Anyone who wanted to know what to think about myriad subjects need only to press a button and receive a simple sound bite. Now the people were free to spend their time on the plights of Britney, Paris and Brangelina. The Great Decider made the tough decisions and the Representatives of the people approved. I love your response!
But it's only confirming my feelings of being a voiceless pawn!!! :)
Unfortunately your response contains complete truth. My co-workers and friends know all about britney, paris and brangelina and could not even name their congressperson to save their lives. And yet, they believe that they are 100% correct about their belief that saddam hussein had wmd, was responsible for 9/11, and that this country will be destroyed by terrorists, universal healthcare is communist, and that spying on Americans is okay because they "aren't doing anything wrong". No doubt they are going to/already do believe the same about Iran.
Damn this country got really stupid really fast.
I am going to be using your USA Inc. from now on, that is perfect!
Citizens not informed about government?
They are informed and did stand in line for hours but their vote was stolen and have been since 2000. Even then with polls and votes (which must have been in large numbers since so many were "lost") we gave them a mandate which they ignore.
They seem to live in their own little "Congressional frat club" where they play the corporate game (USA, Inc.). I no longer listen to their long speeches and hearings because none of it means a thing without action. Nor do I send money except to my favorite Progressive candidates and citizen action groups.
LIttle they care about what the citizens want. They can steal elections and get paid big bucks by the elite. (Note: I happen to think money laundering for payoff for lies and votes is going on with book deals by publishers.)
It is betrayal and many Americans know it even if they can't at the time name their representative. They know when they call or write, they are ignored. That's why Congressional approval is in the single digit range.
Blame our situation in this country's leaders not on the citizens who are the victims but the crooks and liars who only think of their own self interest not their country (it is "public service" not a personal wealth organization). We gave them big raises but that only made them more arrogant. They throw that "I'm so religious and honest" veil around them while they do it.
We have to get the big money of corporations (American or International) out of our government. It seems religious organizations have joined the destruction of our democracy (with our own tax dollars). We fought this before and made laws against corporate and religious abuse.
The laws are not being used\enforced even on a state or local level (corporations steal technololgy, markets, patents...destroy whole towns by just walking away). This reform includes financial off shore banks which money launder to steal elections (and our wealth). Our legal systems (and government agency heads required to protect us) are broke too.
I think they (CEO and board members) should be tried under RICO since they profit and steal from the community (country) and the efforts of workers who made the company successful in the first place. Many shareholders are left in the dark pool of low returns. The CEO (not owners) are committing fraud and robbery yet walk away with huge bonuses and separation packages. Crime does pay in USA, Inc.
It's not America for Sale but SOLD! Follow the money.
THE PAST IS PROLOGUE
The only way this country will change course is for the Democratic Party to sweep Congress and the White House in 2008. We all have issues and there is so much frustration with the party at this time, but, only the voters can change the status quo. There need be no discussion of any third party.... thanks to Nader and Diebold and the US Supreme Court we have a man in the White House who had to steal the election in order to be President.
The Democrats do not have the votes to accomplish ending the war, impeachment, etc. What we have to do is work as hard as we can to enlarge the majority in the House and Senate.
That is the problem with the majority of Americans, they do not know nor do they understand that we must have 60+ votes in the Senate for cloture.
The media continues to ask the same questions knowing that the Democrats do not have the votes to succeed in passing legislation. So before we start bashing our own party we need to understand how Congress operates.
I am amazed at the percentage of Americans who do not understand government.
This upcoming election will be the most important election in my lifetime. If we do not get it right this time around this country is doomed.
I agree 100% with msfitts, silence is not golden. This is not the time to get hurt feelings over whether Congressional members respond to letters or phone calls. We live in Texas and we have never received anything from the GOP stronghold but form letters rubber stamping the Bush/Cheney policies.
This is the time to do everything we can possbily do to help the Democrats take back our country. Our country is being held hostage by a bunch of thugs who just happen to have the upper hand right now. This will change if the people will do what is required and vote them out and vote in a Democratic controlled Congress and White House. This is our country, all of us who are members of this site and all other progressive sites who step up and express their views, and all of the people who want change.
The Democrats are doing the best they can do and we need to support them. This is far too serious to be getting upset over the small stuff.
As we voice our disgust over our representatives, the GOP is out in full force trying to push a Voters Identification bill that if passed in all of the states will require each voter to have a specified type of ID in order to vote. This will hurt our party, in fact it will make Florida 2000 look like Sunday school.
Georgia has passed this law. It is illegal to have a poll tax, but that is exactly what this is. The state of Georgia has agreed to give the voters free voter id cards, the hitch is there is only one location in the entire state to obtain this specific type of ID. This will affect seniors, minorities and the poor. One location in the entire state....the elderly and the poor are unable to get to this location. They cannot afford it. But if they don't have the id they will not be able to vote.
Indiana has passed a voter identification bill that is sitting in the US Supreme Court now. I think we all know what the supreme court is going to do, whatever it takes to give the republican party an edge in 2008.
This is Rove and Company's answer to another Diebold debaucle. These are issues that need to be discussed and the Democratic Party should have this at the top of their list when it comes to the 2008 elections. In Texas thanks to Tom Delay and his redistricting trick our state was chopped up to ensure that the Democrats would be running in predominately republicans territory. Now they are going to make it even more difficult for people to vote with this voter identification bill, which is at the top of the list in the Texas Legistature's next session. Personally, I had rather be assured that every vote will count in 2008 than impeachment.
But, again, we are doing exactly what the GOP/Rove and Company want, they have diverted our attention away from what is a critical issue. The GOP is good at stealing elections and the 08' election will come down to whether a person has the proper id in order to cast their vote.
The Democratic Party should have organizations in place right now to ensure that every senior, minority or poor person has the "right" Voter Id card. Moveon.org has the resources to counter the GOP on this new law that is being passed in many states. I think their money would be well spent on a national campaign to make sure that every person in America, no matter the color of their skin or their age or their financial situation is able to obtain the required documents.
We are so close to the golden ring....and the Democratic Party is the party of and for the people. If we are going to bash anyone it should be the Republicans who have allowed Bush to continue on destroying our nation. Each one them should be targeted in ads, etc. When Olympia Snow was covered up in media ads, she changed her tune.
Agree and Disagree
While I agree with a lot that you said, I have to disagree. The Democrats may not have the votes for cloture or to avoid vetoes, but they are not standing up firm for our values. They've caved on FISA without a fight, they voted to condemn MoveOn.org, Nancy Pelosi took impeachment off the table with the excuse that it would take up valuable time we could use to pass legislation that we want (even though, as you say, we don't have the votes to do that). If we can't do what we want, why can't we spend that time with impeachment proceedings and then, after '08, with (hopefully) a large Democratic majority start passing legislation that we want?
Why have we allowed more funding for Iraq without a fight? Why is harry reid threatening to ignore Chris Dodd's hold on the telecom immunity? Why are many Dems supporting the sanctions on Iran and falling into the same trap that we fell in with Iraq?
We are stalled and are not fighting. The Democrats look and are acting like wimps.
I do understand politics, and there are many parlimentary procedures that can be used that aren't being used. We are not the minority party, we are the majority and the republicans are framing the debates.
Kathy, I agree with you.
Until we have a larger majority in both the House and Senate,
we cannot override GW's veto.
Voter ID cards are another neocon scam to compromise the next elections.
I'm sorry to hear Georgia voted them in.
I'm with you here,
As much as I would like to see GW and Cheney impeached, a Repub majority in the Senate and another Repub in the White House would be unfathomable in terms of destroying our country.
We are not dead yet- the body of our country is still breathing.
We can't afford to lose sight of these upcoming elections.
Our majority is too slim and easily lost.
Those who know History are doomed!
Kathy Schroeder makes some good points. We are experiencing the 21st century Jim Crow Fight. If you have read about this you are doomed to see it play out in all it's horror in real time. The 21st century demographic has changed from poor southern blacks to poor anyone. This ads a new twist to the tale. Now we are ready for the remake. I do not know the ending , but I hope it remains the same with some minor contemporary updates. Journalists like Greg Palast have done a good job of laying out the game plan for Jim Crow 2000. It would do us all alot of good to read about modern election scamming.
As for the notion that the simple tonic for all our ailments is simply electing Democrats , we must go a little further. There is still the K street problem. Until we bring back the party to the people most electees will serve under the multi-national corporate flag. We must put the people back into the republic and end K street's control of our government! Pelosi is still very much playing ball with the boys. She needs to get serious and throw her weight around. She alone can decide what comes before the house and to the public's attention. The time for polite bi-partisan sportsmanship is over this game has to change. Pelosi has the ability to shove the unpleasent task in front of her peers. She does not have the fortitude.
I Agree
But it's not only Pelosi, it's Harry Reid, it's Jay Rockefeller, it's John Conyers kicking Code Pink out of his office. It seems that the Democratic Party is not interested in being the people's party, they want the corporate $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
I'm not seeing anything being done about K Street, but I am seeing Rockefeller being bought by telecoms. I see my Democratic Senator, Amy Klobuchar (who I worked my butt off to get elected) condemn MoveOn.org and voting for increased warrantless surveillance. I'm not seeing anything done about election reform.
I don't know how impeachment is going to cause a republican majority when 71% of this country thinks we are heading in the wrong direction.
I'm extremely confused. I hear all this defense for the Democrats (and believe me - I never have and never will vote republican) but I'm just not seeing the evidence to support defending the Democrats.
Sincerely, and I deeply apologize if I offend anyone. I'm sincerely baffled and dismayed.
When can we vote and be counted?
I' m seeing Pink!
Don't Give Up!
Even if they aren't listening, they know you are there and they know you don't like what they are doing. You have to keep fighting for what's right, because if you don't, they have won. You will also get sick from sitting on your emotions, trust me.
Before I got active I used to sit and read things and get sick to my stomach over what was happening. When I became politically active, the physical problems I had been experiencing went away!
Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose, and I think that is where we are at now.

Republicans Have Used the Justice Department for Partisan Gain Washington, DC -
Tomorrow, the Democratic Leadership of the House Judiciary Committee will hold an oversight hearing on the Voting Section of the Department of Justice, an office politicized by the Bush Administration to promote their own divisive brand of politics. Testifying at the hearing will be John Tanner, chief of the Voting Section. Earlier this month at a meeting of the National Latino Congreso, Tanner asserted that voter ID laws do not disenfranchise minorities because "minorities don't become elderly the way white people do; they die first," a statement that has been widely criticized. [FOX News.com, 10/20/07] Under the Bush Administration's politicized Justice Department we have seen an outright attack on voting rights. While the Democratic Party has worked to protect every American's right to vote and have that vote counted, Republicans have aimed to create roadblocks for certain Americans to exercise their right to vote through restrictive voter ID laws, voter purging, and voter intimidation tactics. In their latest scheme, the Republican Administration has manipulated the mission of the Department of Justice, firing US Attorneys who were unwilling to pursue phony "voter fraud" cases, and politicized the Civil Rights Division. DNC Chairman Howard Dean and DNC Voting Rights Institute Chair Donna Brazile issued the following joint statement before Tanner's testimony: "The right to vote is critical to our democracy, yet under Republicans the Justice Department has waged an outright assault on this fundamental right. John Tanner's outrageous comments underscore the GOP's utter disregard for the integrity of our nation's election system and are an affront to the spirit of the Voting Rights Act. He should be fired immediately and replaced with someone who will work to make sure that all citizens are able to vote and have their vote counted. In order to even begin to undo the damage done by Bush Republicans, if confirmed as Attorney General, Judge Mukasey must commit to replacing Tanner with someone who will protect our rights, not ignore them for a partisan agenda." Tanner Claims Voter ID Laws Don't Help Minorities Because Minorities "Die First." At an Oct. 5 meeting of the National Latino Congreso, when asked about voter ID laws Tanner said, "'Our society is such that minorities don't become elderly the way white people do; they die first,' Tanner said. 'There are inequities in health care,' Tanner continued. 'There are a variety of inequities in this country. And so anything that disproportionately impacts the elderly has the opposite impact on minorities; just the math is such as that.'" [FOX News.com, 10/20/07] ###
I Promise I Won't Stop
Hi Kathy,
I get (and have been) very fed up, but I don't seem to ever stop. The country and our future just means too much for me. If it takes getting all the incumbents out of office and starting fresh, then that's another battle I will join.
Sometimes it gets to be too much for me and I have to vent and let off some steam and check around and see if anyone is as angry as I am, and if they are angry at the same things.
I promise I'm still on board and fighting.
the only way to change is democrats sweep- WRONG
What we have developed in our political system is what I call good cop bad cop syndrome. You know, like on cop tv shows. We vote in one group and they screw us in favor of corporate america. Then we vote in the other group and they screw us for corporate america. And it will continue to go on until we change the system and change the rules. We can attempt to do this through legal means. We can attempt to do it with introducing bills (which they keep voting down....hmmm what a coincidence), or by other means such as boycotts or something else. But the point is we have to stay involved until we fix it. The reason for this is because it is OUR system. We Own it and we are responsible for it functioning properly. The United States of America is OUR (we the people) company. And we have the right to have input into how we are governed and how we represent ourselves among the nations of the world and how we treat each other and wish to be treated which has to do with a little used word these days known as RESPECT. This includes respect for other people and other views and other beliefs. And if our workers (representatives) are not living up to our expectations then we fire them. And if they will not leave then we have them removed through legal actions. And if they are continually making decisions that are not in our best interests (we the people), then we take legal actions to have them removed and incarcerated for actions that may be harmful to the majority including risking our very lives and lively-hoods. But we have to find people who are willing to stand up and say: Hey you guys are making bad decisions for our future and for our children's futures and we will not allow it. And We have to stay involved and keep trying until we win back our country because if we don't they will continue until nothing is left of us or worse enslave us and crown themselves kings.
Shotgun?
Shotgun approaches achieve nothing but soothing one's egos.
Modern Conservatism IS the problem.
1) This has infected the Republican Party en mass.
2) This has infected the Democratic Party VIA THE DLC.
The goal is NOT to move our entire civilization via boycotts, etc. Civilization is bigger than you.
The goal is to fight a manageable battle. For like minded folks to come into union under a single label, DEMOCRAT, expel the DLC, and re-establish a robust Democratic Party.
