SAY HELLO TO THEIR LITTLE FRIEND: The TASER

The recent tasering of a student after he questioned John Kerry during a university appearance was a painful example of misjudgment by police officers. In "ganging" up on him both physically and psychologically, they instigated his shock, disorientation, then panic. Yet he was never a threat; nor was he vicious. He was not an "enemy combatant." His questioning was passionate but salient, his only "crime" being wordiness.

Such passion is not unheard of at these events. An aide will usually move in to focus the person's attention on time and decorum. Occasionally it will accelerate to a warning about calling security. No such preliminaries occurred here. The overkill in numbers and brutish behavior created a crisis of fear and an unjustified, wrongful tasering. There was NO justification for introducing this weapon.

The taser was allegedly supposed to be a weapon of last resort in a crime setting. Unbelievably, in this case it was employed for political convenience. In deference to a senator's comfort level, law enforcement officers engaged in conduct that violated the playbook and exacerbated emotions rather than defused them. Misuse of tasers on people innocent of any crime is un-American, incompetent, and insane. For knowledgeable law officers, such cavalier abuse marks a wretched benchmark: the self-fulfilling prophecy.

The incident's larger symbolism was also unmistakable. This student's passion mimicked the frustration of millions who have been anguishing for years while Congress does nothing to stop the serial violence of unchecked greed. They watch passively as innocent people are tortured or killed, and their own sympathizers brutalized.

For six years these tyrants have been soiling in our collective messkits. But instead of stopping them, Republicans close ranks trying to cover it up, while democrats run around waving a diaper trying to change them.

Preemptive overkill rules - because war is now officially permanent.

I don't know why you didn't just add this comment...

to the taser thread already begun. As for your introduction, the police involved have been placed on unpaid leave while an investigation takes place.

Kerry's response was proper--he made an attempt to stop the action against the 'heckler.' He also made an attempt to answer the question.

There is also some material beginning to show up in the media that show a number of problems with this particular student.

You are correct however, 4-6 police should have been able to remove the student without the use of the taser.

DU has been attacked by 'Taser' trolls who have attempted to take over the threads there. That is why I ask why you did not just add this material to the existing thread. There is a thread at DU by Will Pitt who points out the problem: in general discussion/general discussion-politics.

One of the little bits surfacing is that this student has a reputation on campus as a prankster/blogger on his own site. Perhaps these officers were aware of his past(?). Need to wait till the rest of the story comes out.

Here is a link to one of the DU threads that brings up...

additional material and a few eyewitness accounts that show how badly the media handled this story:

It's been a while since I've been on this board and am confused by the tag system (I can never tell if it's working when holding down the key).

There was no excuse for using a taser on this student. Tasers are for potentially lethal situations, and the only potentially lethal factor here was the taser.

I've attended multiple dozens of such events. There is often someone long-winded like this. (The difference here is that his questions were actually impt.) Event people know how to handle it and so does the audience. If he would not have let Kerry eventually answer, the audience would have told him to shut up. But as you say, Kerry was beginning to take control when the police started shoving him around and throwing him into panic mode.

When panic happens, the brain shuts down and the body goes into survival mode. I repeat: Kerry could have handled this. It was the police that exacerbated the situation. Then they used a taser on someone whose only crime was not getting to his questions faster.

This fellow may have been clumsy, but he was clear on key offenses that have NEVER been satisfactorily answered since 2004. He was no danger to anyone. It's the occasional schizophrenic or criminal element that slips in every once in a while who make for uncomfortable moments.

This fellow's questions were OUR questions.
