A brief conversation with Congressman Space (D-OH)
I attended the latest Jefferson-Jackson Dinner for my county's Democratic Party where Space was the Keynote Speaker. I'll confess that - going in - I was irate at two positions taken by my congressman; impeachment, and his Iraq Occupation votes.
He voted against the McGovern Amendment that required a withdrawal of our troops within nine months and then voted in favor of Rep. Murtha's amendment to only fund the war until mid-summer. To me, this is inexcusable. His vote to keep this occupation going one more day without a clear path for our troops to come home hit really hard in my soul, thus leading to my signature on the Pledge.
The event kicked off with the Invocation, led by a Pastor and Former Councilman, as well as one of the first to sign my personally created petition demanding impeachment, (Bill Rauch) here in my home of Newark, whom felt the need to include a prayer for "justice" before concluding. What struck me immediately about him was the fact that he was brandishing the "Impeach Bush" button I had (bought for/given) him. He proudly showed it off to me as he walked from the podium - around the congressman - to his seat.
When Space took the podium for his address, the monotoned Congressman (whom put my poor wife partially to sleep) thanked us for our warm welcome. He remarked that he is well aware of the probability that we may not agree with all of his votes; noting that we probably discussed some before the dinner. Space described DC as "another planet" and even credited his congressional colleagues (even the Repugs) with having "the intent to do what's best for their country."
I was repulsed by the mere thought of my congressman believing that even half of the Repugs in Congress had our best interests in the hearts with every vote, but then he proceeded talking about his initial experiences in DC. He told of the night he met Bush, calling him "good naturedly goofy" and even stating the he even liked him. "Goofy" and "Likeable"? A man that is single-handedly responsible for the deaths of over a million people so far? The man whose administration picks and prods at the constitution and the overall rule of law on a daily basis? I thought I was about to lose the meal I had just ate...
Zack would continue to note that the Occupation (he said "disastrous war", but I refuse to call it something that it no longer represents) needs to end (explain the vote then buddy...), placing it among the "top five" important issues facing this congress; alongside Global Warming, Globalization, the "War on Terror" (aka, BOOsh's blank check to wage war on the rule of law, democracy, republicanism and the poor throughout the world) and one other issue that has completely escaped me (this might be due to my anger with the fact that "impeachment" or something of the like wasn't amongst his list)...
After he was finished speaking, my "impeachment" button donning ally delivered the benediction - "justice" mentioned again within - and dismissed the attendants. Following a struggle through the small crowd that had surrounded Space for autographs, I managed to reach him. I got his signature and he joyfully recognized me from his 06' campaign (wherein I had spoke with him on a number of occasions, advising him to steer clear of the DLC and "Blue Dogs", I wonder if he listened...), he politely asked how life has treated me since we last met and I told him of my son and my marriage to his mother, but I quickly got to business.
Being as respectable as I could (considering all the aforementioned noted positions) I asked if I could request something of him, he appeared comfortable and attentive as he said "sure". Remarking on his prior career as a lawyer and Dover City Law Director, along with his naturally included knowledge of the law, I pleaded with him to seriously consider impeachment. He then got serious and quickly noted that he is. He mentioned his uncertainty on whether it's right for the country right now "not that (Bush) doesn't deserve (impeachment)." After I reinforced my insistence that he seriously consider this vital matter, he promised that he would continue to do so.
So, it looks as if impeachment isn't totally off the table for him. I strongly disagree with his reservations on pursuing justice; especially when considering his knowledge of the rule of law as a prosecutor for the people of Dover, Ohio. Is it right for the country? Hell yes. Not only is it right for America, but it would be incredibly beneficial to the entire planet if this bastard (Bush) and his regime were impeached, removed, and incarcerated for their transgressions!!
There is some hope, KEEP THAT PRESSURE UP!!
(I want to apologize to the areligious members of this site; I just thought it was relevant to mention the fact that such an influential member of my community felt so morally inclined to wear a button promoting impeachment and mention justice during his prayer at a dinner attended by our congressman. I sincerely hope I haven't offended anyone)
