Standards of Conduct
Fiduciaries are held to a higher standard of conduct in financial affairs. Court Judges are held to a standard that they must "avoid even the appearance of impropriety" because their actions have an impact on the people they are "hired" to oversee and serve. Politicians, in their public service, should have similar requirements. Not as R.M. Nixon so laughingly described on TV years ago: "when you have the office/power you reward your friends and punish your enemies" chuckling all the while. I want the best government money canNOT buy. I want represenetatives who support and vote for what they in their hearts believe is best for the people and country, not best for themselves and their friends. Mistakes will be made, but corrupt actions in their position as our reps. are not to be tolerated. Impeach !
Yeah Impeach
We owe it to the Iraqi's and the world to not put another power hungry warmonger with corporate ties in our elected office. The person must be in touch with how the poor and middle class people all around the world, feel the financial pinch when people in charge, only fill their family coffers.
If they have earned the people's trust during the election fairly, they should be rewarded with the seat. Not because they cheated. Another cheat, in another election, is not a wise thing to do to pissed off dems, switch party anti-war Repubs, and Independents. Barack has said last week if he wins the nomination, he will seat the delegates. What more does she want. The people's vote will count but just not now. He offered to have a caucus, and I think We supporters discussed on a blog, if maybe either of them would pay for one state apiece to primary. That wasn't good enough.
I'm tired of bending over and bowing down to the lyars who got us in this war, especially when they act like 4,000 lives didn't matter.
I heard the full sermon on Wright and he's prayed over many poor family's troop members and he was crying and angy at the lie to get us there. It was very true. I still cry and I'm African American Native American.
I see that picture of the Native American again, crying over the waste of land through polutions in water and air. Only it's the thirty year old nightmare of the 70's with all the regulations covered by Bush's cronies in charge.
WE THE PEOPLE must demand, above board standards in charecter and behavior.
We have perhaps maybe the last chance to get this right. I'm gonna vote for Barack because he is smart enough to know that everybody and I mean everybody, will be so far up his butt when he's elected, no black man in his positions would dare to screw up. The honor is too honorable a service to the People. Barack understands this, but judging from the Rovian tactics book, Respect is not a 'winning' charecteristic to the STATUS QUO.
They like it just the way it is. PROFITABLE!

Big Oil
Why isn't Bush stealing the Iraqi oil?
simply put.....
He can't. Security is not in place to sufficently take over the physical OIL system(wells, pipelines, etc) and the Iraqi "government" isn't completely in Bush/Cheney's pockets.
Wasn't the whole war issue about securing America's strategic interests in the Middle East, ie. OIL? Sorry, I must have been THINKING for a moment there - it was all about WMD and terrorists, wasn't it?
We were told that with Iraqi oil the war would pay for itself AND rebuild the Iraqi infrastructure. Whazzupwidat? Why don't the Iraqis have clean water, working sewers and consistent electricity yet? And why are they complaining about being "occupied" by the US? Don't they understand we're there to "help them"? I mean REALLY...... Don't they appreciate that embassy we're building there or the military bases? Don't hear Halliburton complaining though.
They are, the Saudi's wells,
They are, the Saudi's wells, have to be getting low by now. They had concerns in the 70's about the amount balance in the Middle East.
There plan was to develope large populace and have all the gas guzzling cars, sold overseas. They made the whole new Cadillac series in the early seventies, trying to do it then. WE the People stopped them and we have a strong seed. Our children are "up" on what is going on.
They are doing what OUR history books have taught them. Barack is a teach or the Constitution and this has to be rubbing him the wrong way, that Bush and Cheney have done.
He is the right one to get the remaining republican conservatives to compromise and right this country. Hagel knows the devistation and it would be a great ticket and show of UNITY.
Besides, Hagel is not a Right Wing NUT. He's a moderate. Therein lies the election. To united in common sense and wisdom, for or children's future.
I love my cubs and don't want them used for a poisonous gas to our enviornment. It isn't fair to die for anything but when it is your time to go. And that America, includes healthcare to all the citizens that have been breathing this carbonmonoxide mix for over 80 years. Think about the asthma children who's mothers work two jobs and are just above the poverty level by, oh... 10 dollars. Insurance companies say, rules are rules. They get paid to deny, that's why I left the Medical Coding and Billing profession. An 57 year old woman that was never sick a day in her life and had been on the health insurance plan at a company I worked for. She started water retention in her ankles and hands.
Hands that had worked in a chicken processing plant that had carpal tunnel, she never did anything about, but now she really needed this coverage. My supervisor and I had a severe conflict of opinion and I quit.
The company had changed the rules to if the patient had saught preventative care, they would be eligible to recieve the coverage. There was no heart attack emergency and the woman needed her arteries gone through in a proceedure where a tiny camera would be inserted and run up the veinous cavities to see if there was blockage. She needed this and had paid for over thirty two years. Because they changed the rule, the previous year, after she had started to notice the swelling in her hands first(fingers) and made a appointment that took her two months to get,
This turned the calendar to the following year and she was to get a denial.
Now there are appeals, and they try to tie you up in court, threatening your dismissal for too many days. This woman had already lost points on her job, and could have been fired if too many absenses occurred.
I couldn't do it and sought a new career, fixing homes. I'm a carpenter and contractor. I can build a house from foundation to truss. I roof, vinyl side and can lay a floor that would make my mother proud. I'm happy to help people have the American dream. It's rewarding to watch them the days they drive by to watch us put up a three story home, with a crew of seven, in four days. Setting of windows doesn't count. We sub-contract.
This is as rewarding to me as I see the light in Barack's eyes when he talks and speaks from the heart about where he wants to lead our country to be again. For the People, Of the People and By the People.
Not the corporations and military industrial complex, Shrillary!

Where's the first lady?
Seems real strange to me that since the debates started almost a year ago, no one has seen Laura Bush. Is she embarassed of the Republican Party too? You know, the GOP aka "Good Ol' Party" Where could she be......
Who cares...?
Who cares...?
Re Where's the first lady?
You mean, "prozac patty"?
Leave Iraq now
Trouble is, leaving Iraq now leaves the few citizens who want change toward democracy vulnerable. But without leaving we are digging ourselves deeper into financial ruin as a nation and into an untenable position with other world powers. We are losing more soldiers, equipment and money than are other nations. We are expending brain power for the civil war that is taking place. Put the money we spend toward developing viable alternative fuels and remove our motivation to be there. We need to leave Iraq, love the soldiers who are fighting there and support them when they come home damaged, and somehow provide support for those who stay behind to try to revitalize their own nation. It's a tall order but worth it.
GREAT POST!!
Excellent post. I couldn't have said it any better.
Leave Iraq Now, and leave it safe.... To accomplish both
To leave it and leave it and its people much safer than when we were there, all the regional arab nations need to participate in a coalition... even our "enemies."
Broker an Arab coalition meeting. Get the appropriate tribes policing and guarding their own, or create a UN-style Arab Coalition police force so that there are checks and balances to each police force.
Syria, Iran, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, etc... all need to participate. Sunni, Shiite, Kurdish neighborhoods need to be assured of their safety.
We agree to finance through continued purchase of their oil...
US boots leave their soil, they are provided security until they can stand on their own.
Then, we put as much money into getting the fossil fuel monkey off our back in short order.
To those who say the
To those who say the soldiers can't leave Iraq NOW:
It's primarily a police (law and order) task now in Iraq. Soldiers and merceneries typically are not good police. The many crimes committed by the mercenaries and yes even the soldiers was a direct result of using "military force" to watch and protect itself from civilians. Iraq has no military, for the most part it has been civilians who want the "occupiers" out who have been fighting. And yes there is civilian killing civilian becasue law and order has broken down. Iraq has been the wildwest with MILITARY OCCUPIERS being the heavy handed ones since the invasion/occupation started. Tanks, missles, fighter jets against small arms and home made bombs... That is what would happen in ANY country including the US if the US were ever to be OCCUPIED MILITARILY. The occupiers had all the MIGHT. It contributed to all the problems. A police force made up of UN personnel and Iraqi police could handle the situation and handle it MUCH better than US soldiers and mercenaries. We could have the soldiers all home within 3 months. We must have the will to do this and stop listening to the major media and their lies telling the people in the US "Oh we (the US MILITARY) can't leave now." We can and we should leave now. Help put more of the people of Iraq to work. They need JOBS. That was one of the biggest problems: The US Military Strategy put so many Iraqi's OUT of work. No wonder there has been so much civil unrest! It was a strategy that ensured the violence would esculate and continue. The strategy created enemies to the occupation.
28 Years of two Families
We do not need 28 years of two families the Bushes and the Clintons. It is time for CHANGE. OBAMA in 2008.
obama
When the democratic party runs Barack Obama my wife will vote Republican in 2008 - keith & Alice lehman - Portland IN
Does your wife really want
Does your wife really want another four years of war and Dubya-cloned corporatist government for the "have mores", or is she just a racist?
Mrs. Rethug? I presume?
What a waste of a vote. Certainly not the colors of the Real America; Red, White & Blue.
Hillary Clinton 2008!!!
Trust me! There is no one out there that is more progressive than I am but I truly feel that Hiilary is still the better choice for president than Obama, though it seems that a lot of the lilberal-democratic vote has gone towards him. No one can deny the intelligence of Senator Clinton whether you like her politics or not, and her experience as First Lady where she was respected by dozens of major foriegn leaders, does matter! It's the reason why her plans are superior to Obama's on Iraq, Health Care, and the Economy.
Iraq: Many liberals criticize her vote for the Iraq War Resolution, which is outrageous because it can only be expected that she would vote that way, representing a constituency whose largest city was attacked a year before. She has since been very clear on her position. Once president, she will consult with her Joint Chief of Staffs to prepare a time table for withdrawal within 60 days of her presdiency.
Health Care: Because I live in Ohio, I remember recieving the letter from the Barack Obama Campaign in my mail which stated that her health care plan would force people to buy health care that they can't afford which is completely misleading! Senator Clinton as well as Senator Obama offer tax credits just for that! In addition, Hillary Clinton also offers a variety of choices such as a public plan, buying in to the plan members of Congress enjoy, or even stick to the private plan you have now! The only thing that would change is that HMO's would not be able to deny you coverage based on pre-existing conditions! But what makes Hillary's plan superior is that it truly is universal health care since everyone is covered. Obama's plan will leave and estimated 10 to 15 million people out of the system because he only sets mandates on children and not adults.
Economy: The economy is believed to be the most important issue in this election, due to our current recession. A large part of our recession is due to our housing crisis which brings me to my point. The one thing Hillary Clinton offers in her economic plan that Barack Obama does not is that she will freeze the interest rates on mortgage payments putting some stability into our economy and bringing at least some alleviation for low income and middle class families.
Although without a doubt Senator Obama is inspiring such as in his speeches were he mentiones "hope", "change", and "healing the nation", Hillary Clinton's speeches talk about "solutions" to our nation's most important problems, I should know as someone who attended her rally in Cleveland two days before the Ohio Primary, and for 35 years she has been making change both as a Senator of New York, First Lady of Arkansas and the United States, and her life in public service which is why I am so confident that she will make a great president. Thank you for anyone who took the time to read my entire comment and regardless of which candidate gets the nomination we need to stand behind him or her as loyal Democrats in order to save our country from another 4 years of right-wing leadership!
Why do we only get two choices?
Why don't you include "none of the above" as a choice?
Bodhi
I'm glad to see Obama is ahead in this poll
in spite of the biased wording of the poll. The email I received said "Dear Activist, In the wake of the controversy over Obama's pastor, we're conducting a snap Presidential poll of our readers for publication on Democrats.com tomorrow." How about reminding fellow activists about all the controversies surrounding Clinton, McCain, etc? What about the nut-job pastors who support McCain? Obama has addressed this controversy to my satisfaction. Let's move on and support the most progessive candidate and, in my opinion, the only candidate who can beat McCain. I saw Karl Rove on FOX "news" the other night, giving advice to Hillary. The Republicans would LOVE it if she were our nominee! Why do you think Rush Limbaugh was encouraging Republican Texans to cross over and vote for her in the TX open primary?
I agree this poll fell down
How about "In the wake of the negative, biased press coverage given to Obama and the attacks leveled at Obama by Clinton........."
Or, how about "We are taking a poll. Please respond." Is this the level of this Web site? Or is this the Democrats?
Wake up, or you will shoot yourself in the HEAD, Democrats.
As most of you are aware, this poll is NOT...
a scientific poll--it is merely a personality poll based on people's likes and dislikes.
Polls like this one are frequently skewed to the extreme for one candidate--as this one appears to be at this point. The numbers do not even come close to the national numbers on the major scientific polls.
The biased press coverage we have lived with for 16 years now. That should not come as a surprise. As far as dirty politics, one only has to visit KOS or general discussion--primaries at DU to see the preponderance of slurs/slams/all directed at Hillary. There is no doubt that the 'right' is contributing to the sleeze in this campaign. Many of the slams against Clinton have no basis in fact and come directly from the right-wing talking heads. We need to keep this in mind.
Obama is just now experiencing some long-needed scrutiny that he has not before experienced in this campaign.
There is much talk about why are the candidates not attacking McJoke instead of each other. The answer should be obvious to all: They are competing with each other at this time, not McJoke. Attacks against the 'other guy' will be apparent during the GE, not now in the primary series.
Instead of beating the opponent of your candidate over the head, you might better spend your time expounding in detail as to why YOUR candidate will do a better job.
This poll is a snapshot in time. It is open to all...and to the friends and fellow supporters of all. It will not be accurate in any way.
On with the campaign. Oh, one other thing, this is politics, not a camp meeting. American politics historically are quite dirty and nasty. It is the way we do this thing called politics.
On to the next primary.
Both candidates are qualified for the job they seek.
A mind once expanded can never return to its original dimensions.
Anne Hathaway: 1556-1623
The greatest derangement of the mind is to believe in something because one wishes it to be so.
Where again was the bias?
1) There was a controversy.
2) Perhaps it had an impact, perhaps not.
3) Lets see. Please vote in a poll.
--------
Your first attempt at a poll starter was obviously infinitely biased. Your last attempt was the least biased possible. It was also the least likely to gain participation in yet another poll.
I assume #1 above was added to motivate participation WITHOUT introducing bias. I do agree however that this is not the purest form of polling, but I do not see a general bias towards either candidate: folks come rushing in to BOTH defend and denigrate.
Considering the small sample size here, we would not even see any residual bias even if it existed, so the question is academic. Of greater importance is gaining a larger sample size in the first place, and THAT requires motivation. Further, a larger sample size is not being garnered to come close to some National average, but rather to energize folks and give democrats.com a picture of the member's views.
just my 2 cents.
Jim
I am afraid the Dems will blow it!
With a huge fight looming over our convention (WI and FL) and Hillary taking the low road of personal attacks (like seemingly BLAMING Obama for the voters in those two states not being represented), we could just loose this one. After the last two elections, that would truely make me want to leave this country. We should be able to Beat McCain!!!
I am for Obama, I admit it; the pollsters would assume I was for Clinton, since she and I could be the same woman (age, race, etc). What concerns me is the lack of focus for the Democrats. The in-fighting and name calling and so on. I honestly think that Obama has mostly kept himself above the fray. Even when Clinton, who was BEHIND, suggested a "dream ticket" with him #2, he was a gentleman.
Let us unite! We had a group of amazing candidates; if the best are not the last two standing, so be it. They are both better than anyone the Republicans had to offer (all of our candidates were). We need to unite and work together. If you are a Clinton supporter, please convince her staff to take the high road. Also, write to the various news organizations and ask THEM to take the high road of good journalism. Often they give more time to their "analysts" than they do to the candidates. Americans can listen to the candidates and make up their own minds, if they are allowed to listen to the candidates when they are talking issues (not all of the side bullshit) Let's not lose this one with our own stupidity.
Let's not let the Old Tricksters Fool Us Again~~~
We are always getting the short end of the stick by the media. Let us vote this time with our hearts and concious. Do we want 100 more years of WAR... Our country is already broke, overtaxed, inflated and suffering. Where do our troops belong? Here on the homefront protecting our lands.
How many times do we have to be fooled? Till we no longer are a nation? We're being illegally invaded on our borders, corrupt justice, corrupt legislation, make up laws as you go. Stealing our children that they claim we never had rights to, we were only priviledged, etc. etc.
moving forward
God help me if I am to be held accountable for the actions of the all the priests who've been in my life. Let's move forward, not back.
Why Hillary should win the nomination
I believe that Hillary should be the next President because she would bring many years of expertise of dealing with the different factors which make up our society.
Let's look at what she has accomplished. She has worked for and obtained childhood healthcare coverage in one or more of our nation's states. She has established a good rapport with many foreign emissaries and diplomats. She has the spirit to fight for all of America's citizens. She does possess the knowledge on what is needed to end our involvement in Iraq.
Hillary will bring the best change for our country at this time in our history. I hope that all Democrats who have already formed a negative opinion of her service record, specifically her record as senator, will think again of what is at stake in this upcoming presidential election.
Hillary or Obama
I am for Hillary. Have been since she tried to introduce universal healthcare to this country. It took great courage and showed extraordinary conviction to try something as revolutionary as access to healthcare for every individual - even the poor ones. I believed in her long before I heard of Barrack Obama. She is strong and compassionate and will earn back the respect we have lost across the globe in the last eight years. He is a stirring speaker, and if he is nominated, he will get my vote. We are fortunate to have two very able candidates. Let the process take its course and not muck it up with name calling like commom republicans. We just might end up with McCain.
Are you f-ing kidding me!
Are you f-ing kidding me! Barack Obama!???
Do you people not realize McCain/Hillary/Barack are one in the same!? I guess not. They are all members of The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). They are all puppets for David Rockefeller and the elite bankers.
WAKE UP!!!
Puppets?
The vast majority are puppets to a false logic nowadays.
Break that hypnotic spell and there will be progress.
In the meantime we are left with one of three who WILL be president.
Which of them should we choose in order to ease our task of breaking the spell?
This
Is why we should all fight harder than ever to elect Progressives to the House and Senate. We need to send some of the hundreds of millions of dollars that go to Hillary and Obama to downticket candidates.
I felt our one true chance for a Progressive President as far as policy was concerned was Edwards. He was fighting for Progressive policy. Now, I am relegated once again to voting for someone other people believe in at the top, and fighting for a Progressive Congressional candidate that needs my help.
We are fighting Ed Whitfield and the powerful McConnell machine and their millions once more. This is the fight of my life and I love fighting against all odds with the underdog.
One of these times, we WILL win, why not this one?
Wow, a rant. I hope everyone remembers our downticket candidates too. Mine is Heather Ryan and can be seen at:
http://www.ryanforkentucky.com/
I hope everyone will go there and sign up for email updates to join our campaign!!
I totally agree Richard.
I totally agree Richard. Nothing, including the Oval Office, is more important than taking our Congress back from the neocon coporatists on BOTH sides of the aisle.
When the two Houses of Congress return to their sworn oaths and DUTY of overseeing the Executive Branch, I don't give a rat's patootie WHO becomes president. That's the way the Framers designed our representative system of government, and protecting and upholding the Constitution on behalf of the People is the primary function of ALL government employees.
Rich.
Good points all.
In particular, your explicit reference to the tedious, and continuous task, of filling HUNDREDS of seats with decent folks.
No, they are not the same.
No, they are not the same: Hillary and Obama are Democrats. McCain is a neocon Republican Dubya clone, and a war monger -- with PNAC Joe LIEberman as his co-conspirator.
There is no comparison between ANY Democratic candidate and the neoconservative puppet "tax the poor" McBomb-Bomb. Only an out-of-touch and confused "Independent" could make that asinine assessment.
Here I am...

The Bodacity of Hope
Having just recently seen the Cirque du Soleil Beatles show "Love," I'm reminded of a time when we as a culture, or at least counterculture, dared to dream of a world of peace and love, and to do our politics with hope and inspiration. I think we need to recapture that, and not just in Presidential politics, and not just attached to Barack Obama.
I was amused that in the Doonesbury comic strip, one of the characters (might have been Zipper Harris) talked about Obama's "bodacity of hope." We need to start a conversation about how we can take the rhetoric of hope and inspiration and infuse it more widely than just the Obama campaign. How do we launch a kind of social-change movement that is attractive to more people because it has high aspirations and is *fun*? I am soon going to start an online discussion about just that at ProgressivePortal.org.
My first little venture in that direction has been to produce a bumper sticker that says "Yes, We Can!" It doesn't have Obama's name anywhere on it, because it's an important message apart from his candidacy. It's at our online store at: (NOTE: COMMERCIAL LINK REMOVED)
If you have any thoughts about how to shift toward a more positive activism, I would welcome reading your thoughts.
Peace,
Steve
An addition:
Progressive Portal,
Some will always be motivated by hatred, anger, etc.
For a subset of them, I would suggest that we advance Liberal notions WITHOUT appeal to Liberal sensibilities. Otherwise we forever disown a large portion of the population, and are forever locked in battle with them.
This need not be.
Jim
vote for Hillary Clinton,
vote for Hillary Clinton,

IM SO SICK OF THE FIGHTING

The well placed Republican media machine has made its choice.
Wayne Blackshire
Well it looks like the Republicans have decided they can beat Obama easier than Clinton. This is why their right wing media machines are on a full out blitz to destroy Clinton. The way I see it, they put this country where it is today, hated by the world and broken almost beyond fixing. They deserve to be re-elected (or should I say elected)so they can finish the total destruction that they have brought on to this country. God Bless the US, we will need it now.
florida delagates

thumbs down for hillary
the clintons in the white house again ???? i think not. it's time for serious change and i am betting on obama. even tho i am not a fan of hillary's i realize how difficult this must be for her. who'd have thunk that she'd be beat by a young, inspiring black man. there's hope for us yet. vote for obama
my thumb is down too
From what I understand, Hillary thinks the Democratic nomination is hers. She looks at it as almost like a birthright. She will be ready from day one..I think NOT.
I don't think there is anyone who could say they were ready from day one to assume that responsibility. I look at the Presidency as a learning experience and the person who assumes that responsibility should surround themselves with people who are experienced enough and intelligent enough to help ease them into the position.
What America needs right now is a breath of fresh air, and that certainly isn't Hillary.
I look at her as a continuation candidate..not a change candidate. When I see Obama I see hope. I see a man with conviction. I see a man who wouldn't turn his back on his preacher to garner a few more votes. I see a man who can inspire people with his words..and right now this country needs inspiration.
This is a very difficult time for a country which is so great. We have poverty, unemployment, a severe housing problem..and a war that is bleeding us dry. We have far too many people without medical coverage and skyrocketing prices everywhere you turn. This is a time for change..we can't continue along this path.
If you listen closely to Senator Obama, he tells you he can't do it alone, he needs help from all of us. He doesn't tell you what he is going to do..he tells you what WE are going to do. It has to be a united effort, and if we can do that..we can accomplish anything. As a great man once told me..American ends in I can.
Still wish for a Hillary /Obama ticket !
What a dream ticket that would have been .The repugs are going to pound into the Americian mind set that Obama has zero exprience at a time when we need a highly exprienced leader .Dont any of you understand the repugs are salivating at a Obama run ,they know they can beat him. With a Hillary ,Obama ticket we the Dems would win by a land slide .Instead it looks like we once again are going to give the repugs exactly want tey want .Even if your a Obama supporter you should agree that Hillary has him on exprience ,knowing all the world leaders up close and personal ,and Obama is a young man who in 4 or eight years will be ready more then ever to be a two term President. His time will come ,now all he will get is a run for the White House and a disappointing loss ! Sorry thats the way I see it . I would think as smart as Obama is he would not have let all of the people around him keep pusing him for such a downfall. You think they would be more concerned about winnig against the repugs and Obama will not beat McCain ,Hillary can !! Please dont give us even one more day then we have to have under a repug administration !!
Thank You ,NikRik
Hillary Is Not The One!
Yes it would be nice to have a women President..... But this is not the time or the one. Why? because she has to many faces, and she is and showes she is a Bigot and Nefarious.
We need some one sincere B. Obama have what it may take. I have lived to see JFK, Bobby, MLK. after that it has been all down hill. What a Mess!!!
However if people would stop taking thier pills, and or drugs and or drinking pehaps they would be able to see clearly.
Will the REAL HILLARY CLINTON PLEASE stand Up Please Stand Up! Please Stand Up!!!! You realy have to stop speaking out of 7 sides of her mouth and stop being condeceeding, and RACIST!
Have we forgoten the 1.9Billion dollars she lost with Pelossi, in munitions?
Duh! which way did they go???
She can make a remark about how she was decietful about bosnia, But if it were Obama all hell would have exploded.
She reminds me of my EX Mother in Law, Someone please take the nives out of our backs please! She is a FASHIST RICH PIG The best of the PORK!
Respectfully Submitted
So who IS the one?
Which candidate does it for you?
